I know that there's a big variation based on your group's setup, but what are some ranges for call frequency as a private attending? Secondly, for you guys in practice, do you still spend the night at the hospital, or just come in for cases when you get called? Seems like if you're covering OB, for example, you'd pretty much have to stay in house. Just curious; thanks

Pretty wide variety of calls:

In the past year, I have had to stay in house once. My group's call system is a home call/late call system only, with no mandatory in house call. The groups that cover OB in DFW, tend to have to have an in-house member, although some who cover light OB facilities just take home call. One of my classmates took 15 in house calls in one month, but he did so willingly and will bank $400-500K in his first year out.

No in house requirement...OR usually wraps up around 9 pm...Just need to be available for OB....we do 60 deliveries a month...mostly planned inductions and planned c-sections.

call one in 8.

This is very dependent on the indiividual job. There are some jobs where when you are on call you work till 8 go home and never get called in again, and there are some where you work all night and never leave the hospital. There are also those that have in house call, and some do not require it. There are also jobs with no call. You can pretty much find what you like if you look long enough.
