hi just a couple questions on private practice.. namely how are you evaluated? a colleague of mind in a group said they are experimenting with using room turnover time now (last stitch to out the door) which is driving him crazy. are most private practice places doing this?

do you do m+m in private practice or is it just ad hoc as you go pick up stuff..

also do the surgeons have any say in evaluations. ie if you piss some one off by refusing a case or delaying for labs etc. thanks

Yes all things are considered but it is in an informal manner. Generally, you have to really be outside the norm for anything to happen. If you are dangerous though that is a different story.

Think of it this way, it is to your benefit to be quick, get along with everyone and safe. If you can achieve all of these then you will be very successful. Right now I can't think of anything to add to those three that would be more important. Its simple, just do those three things.

I LOOK at EVERYTHING....even your body odor....we have one guy who needed repeated counselling for stinking....literally.

Turnover time is something that is definitely tracked....

I also get a lot of feedback in informal manners....while shooting the shi t over the sink outside the OR...while shooting clay pigeons with 12 gauges.

Sometimes it seems unfair to the new guy, but it is what it is.

You should be evaluated every so often in written and archived in your files. If they tell you "you suck" then you can move on early and not waste your time waiting for partnership. If they say they love you then they better make you partner or you will be suing. Neither of the 2 places where I interviewed did this. I told them it wasn't going to fly with me. They weren't thrilled to hear that. I'm still in academics.

Go to the anesthesia sticky FAQ 3 and at the bottom (venty's post #8), read my long post named ARE YOU READY FOR PRIVATE PRACTICE?

It includes the real way you are evaluated as a new hire.

It'll also inform you on how to receive a thumbs up evaluation in your practice.
