Hi, I had posted about EM private practice possibilities in the Allopathic section, but was wondering what peoples experiences were here?

Does anyone own or work in a private EM practice or group? If so, what are your experiences? Hours, salary, politics, process, etc..

thanks.

I work private practice in Vegas. I generally work 16 10s/mo. Compensation here is high for the national average but we don't get benefits so it probably evens out with a top third package. There are politics of course. Probably a little less than in an academic setting. The egos in private practice are based on $ rather than publications.

you said you work 16 10s/month...what type of rotation for those 10s do you do? (ie - they aren't all during the day...what's the progression? how much choice do you have as far as when you do nights/holidays/days off?) do you find there is more flexibility for you in private practice vs. non-private practice community hospital vs. academic hospital? thanks.

For my group there is no shift progression. It's very random. The trade off is that I can get just about any day off that I ask for when I do my schedule requests about every 2 months.

I have quite a bot of choice. Everyone has to work 2 of the winter holidays and gets a week off around the other one. Everybody has to work some nights but we also have a pay differential (extra money for nights and weekends) so there are guys who like the nights for the extra $.

What is a "non-private practice community hospital." When I say private practice (and I'd say this is the industry standard) I basically mean "not academic." These are really the only 2 flavors of EM. Now within private practice there are various business models.
