2 by 4:00
1 room by 5:00 (on call guy)

the rules are bent about once a week and we may run 2 rooms until 6:00. This is unusal.

Thanks for your replies but.... I was thinking more in terms of percentage. Obviously a large 30 room suite will have more 6PM rooms than a 5 room suite. We have 10 rooms total and recently were asked to run 7 of them past 6PM. That's a big percentage...

We run 6 sites a day.
5 OR
1 Float

OF these, we usually have 1 and sometimes 2 rooms running after 6pm. We negotiated additional compensation for everyone that works after 6pm except the call guy.

So that is about 30%

Why would they ask you to run 70% of your rooms past 6pm? Like Doze said, thats huge. Are you guys that busy? Or is the scheduling that inefficient? Do they have the staff to do this? Our biggest issue is staffing.

If they are allowing surgeons to book cases after clinic hours then you are in for a nightmare. You will have large blocks of time go unused and then ramp up in the evening.

The general OR is staffed, everyday, for four rooms until 7:30, and three rooms until 9:30 and two rooms until 11. we also have 2 cardiac rooms that run until they are done. So... I guess if a heart is going, we could have half of our rooms running till 7:30.
The cases are a mix of overbooked electives, true emergencies and add-ons such as gastrostomies etc.
Curious: if we were to ask for compensation for "excessive" after hours use, what metrics would we use to justify this?
