If I am certain that I want to do private practice and there is a good residency program that has a history of turning out good private practice psychiatrists and also has the patient population that I am looking for BUT there is another institution with a bigger name and PERHAPS better overall training that is more of a community program that I am choosing between. My brain tells me to go to the good private practice program but others tell me that I should go to the community program with the big name and I can always work a little bit harder and still set up private practice with the big name. Please let me know what you think asap!! Thanks!!

"others" don't have to do your program in a place where you're unhappy.

I agree with OPD. There are programs at the bottom of my ROL that would probably provide more opportunities than some at the top of my ROL. However, I would be personally happier with the lesser known schools.

There is some saying that says something like - If you make yourself happy in the short-run........everytime, you can't help but be happy in the long-run.

My understanding is that if you want to go into academics then name and reputation matter and should factor into your choice but that for private practice it doesn't matter at all. Go where you think you're going to be happiest and thus most successful.

Go to the program that will train you best to meet YOUR goals.
If you think the one program will train you better to be a private practice doc and that's what you want to do, why would you go to the other place?

Reputation is nice, but about the only thing that will do is help open the first door. After that, your work track record is going to speak for itself.

That being said, I'm not sure why a program would be better suited for private practice. Do they have more outpatient time or something that is more in line with your goals?
