This might be a stupid question but can DOs have their own private practice? Im looking into either family medicine or general surgery and I was curious if I would be able to open a private practice?

short answer: yes.

long answer: yessssssssssssssssssssssss

DOs are physicians and they can do whatever a medical license allows them to do. Private practice is becoming increasingling hard for both MD and DO docs, and many hospitals are engulfing solo practices.

If u wanna go into private pract, go for it tho.

I would look into an MBA since no medical school in this country really teaches you the business aspects of medicine, just the saving lives part.

This. I have had numerous doctors, private practice and hospital employed, that have told me the business aspect of medicine is pretty complex with most suggesting an MBA or, at least, some business classes if you are considering opening your own private practice. However, most private practices are hemorrhaging money in this economy which inevitably results in hospitals picking them up. If you are considering opening your own practice I wish you all the best. It won't be as easy as it has been in the past, but loads of respect for anyone tackling that beast.
