Private vs Public costs

I've noticed that many of the public programs are just as costly as private if you are oos. For instance, I saw MWU(known for the price tag) estimates 130k each year but so does MN and Nebraska.. Is this really how it is or are they overestimating their costs? Correct me if I am wrong..

This is why everyone wants to attend their state school and save that $$$. Costs are usually slightly over what it will actually cost you so that you have some buffer in case anything happens. You can save a lot of cash by attending your state school, having room mates, not buying books and parking passes, and just generally living frugally.

Well I have heard that some public ones considers you IS after the first year so it might be better to choose one of them than a private.

Students switch to in-state tuition after the first year. That’s how the end up cheaper after 4 years.

Nope, many programs do not allow it. Off the top of my head I know that Maryland, Florida, and the California schools allow it. There is a post somewhere on SDN with a decent list. Switching residency usually comes down to living there for 12 months, getting your car registered there, getting a drivers liscense there, owning property there, and even keeping your pet there.

I am at a state school that OOS tuition is about the same as the private schools I was accepted to. When you have no instate option they all come pretty close to the same price...
