Hi guys,

I have an interview for a PRN extern part time position at a hospital and am thrilled of course. How many hours does that usually mean. I am a P1 with a 4.0 who currently teaches chem lab 2 nights a week. What should I say about my availablity. I only want 1-2 shifts a week but don't want to screw up this potentially awesome opportunity. Should I say I can work anytime and just watch the videotapes of class or give just thursday thru sunday availability. What do you think they are looking for?

If it's for an intern/extern position, it's assumed that you're a student, so I doubt they want you to miss class to work. The fact that it's not just straight part-time, but prn part-time seems to make me think it won't be many hours. Every place is going to be different though, so this would be something to ask about. Some of my classmates work at a hospital a few days a week, but there is another hospital in the area where the students work every third weekend. You might want to stop doing the chem lab after this semester to work at the hospital in terms of long-term employment opportunities, although that might not be necessary. Good luck!

I've seen it done a couple different ways. My hospital just emails out open shifts to prn people and its completely up to them if they want to pick them up. I interviewed at a hospital that had all their interns that were actually part time turn in dates they needed off at the beginning of a semester and your schedule was the days they needed off.

Its depends on their needs. (Hence PRN). Id give your honest availability, the times youre open (the wider the better) and the number of hours you could work (max and min). Theyll understand that as a student weeks can change.

Some weeks I work 0 hours, some I work 30. It depends on what they need and when Im available. The cool thing about PRN is youre always in the right to say no, you arent available. But do that too often and theyll stop calling/asking.

I'd say ditch teaching the chem lab and take more hours at the hospital, that'll go a hell of a lot further on a resume when applying for a real job.

Yeah I know this. Problem is I get $50/hr as a teacher. I pretty much have committed for next semester but then will either drop to one class or none. I know the hospital job is best for the long run but am waffling cause I need the money. Phone interview said mostly weekends. holidays and breaks which would be perfect. Real interview on Monday, Wish me luck.
