I've collected 2 science LORs and 1 non-science LOR.

I don't have a lot of shadowing hours because I decided to switch career paths last year.

I've shadowed 3 dentists(for only 1 day at each office). I've also been doing volunteer work for the past 2 months at a local free clinic near my school which is employed by one dentist. I forgot to ask him for a LOR before I left to go home for the summer(i go to school out-of-state). I decided to email him and requested an LOR and haven't received a reply.

I'm going to be leaving for a study abroad program soon and will not be able to shadow during the summer. I'm getting pretty desperate and thinking about just contacting the dentists that I shadowed for one day and see if they can help me out, but it doesn't seem like a wise idea since they barely got to know me.

Any advice??

Well, if you are going to study abroad soon, how are you going to be able to schedule interviews and confirm them when they come around? Not to mention some interviews are held during late summer months too.

No soup for you!

After shadowing for a single day, one wonders what sort of lor could any of the good doctors possibly write.

There is really only one option here!

Go to the three dentists, tell them your situation, and see if you could help you out by writing any sort of letter to fulfill the requirement. It may not great, but a nice dentist would try his best to butter it up. Maybe he could sit you down and interview you for a little more insight.

I had this type of problem with one of my letter of recs. Realized I had to fill some strange requirement of a science professor outside of my major. Went to the proff (who had to ask my name again) with my situation, CV, personal statement, and she was more than willing to help out the best she could.

It nots the best case scenario , but maybe the only scenario.

yeah, i've been thinking about taking that route. It probably wouldn't be a great letter but my professors wrote me pretty good ones since I've had each of them for 2 classes and have been a TA for one course.

....or i can shadow in the fall and get the last letter in really late, but i don't think that i would receive interview invites.

Why not call the dentist at the clinic? Too many people rely on e-mail because either they can't work up the courage or they're too lazy to just call someone. Really, call him and he'll most likely say yes. Problem solved.

Same thing sort of happened to me, I had e-mailed a professor but never heard back; I finally called and they said they'd be glad to do it. On a side note, I asked the prof if he had seen my e-mail and he said he doesn't check his class e-mail around finals time because it's normally full of e-mails from pre-med, pre-dent, etc. explaining why they need an A and if he would please understand or give extra work to boost their grade (even thought he was quite clear not to do this at the start of semester), haha.
