Problem at job

So... I work at CVS and umm we are under staffed and we always had flotters around. My problem is that ... I dint get trained that much because I take lods of credit this sem and I mostly work at evening where it is just me and a pharmacist.. ( to be honest all I do is fill prescription, do cashier job at the register, put back medications in sometimes put back all the medicines that was ordered, answer phones) I mean I jus doo all this by myself...
and Now we have a trainee comming to ceritfie me as a TECH and I still dont know how to deal with rejected insurance, add new coustomer in etc etc.... coz when i work pharmacist does the drop off and veryfying thing. I was never exposed to it. So i am really scared !!
Lets say if i quit my job right now saying i got a schedule change at college and i cant work anymore ??? Does it look bad ? In future can i apply at any other CVS or will CVS consider me a big NO NO while rehiring in future coz i quit before?

Do not quit your job. Tell the training person that you have not had a chance to learn the things that they are trying to certify you for, and that you need him/her to help you with these specific items. You should have also gone through several training CDs - if not, then you need to do that first.

The reason they are pushing you to do this is because the store is supposed to eventually have all their techs PSA certified and tech-certified, and there's a time limit on that before it starts being a negative for the store. If you haven't been working many hours it's doubly hard to learn all these things. Will you be working more hours this summer? Maybe you could convince them to wait just a couple of more months so you could learn some of the tasks.

Do a couple of the CDs on Rx2000. For the next few shifts, only work at drop-off.

All I do at the store I work at is drop-off, production, reconstitutes, consultation, and call doctors.

Two things I never do anymore. I never answer the phone, and I rarely do pickup unless the pharmacist yells at me to go there. Those are the most annoying positions to work at because of this:

Pickup - "$15???? I never paid that in my life. My drug card says $3 here!!!!! You're robbing me!!!!"

Pickup + Phone - Some guy walks in to pick up a script for his wife. It's like $200 so he just shrugs and puts it on his wifes credit card. One hour later, we get a call from his furious wife about why it is $200, ranting about getting things done herself and how men just pay for things without scrutinizing the price.

don't be a quitter...just let them know what your situation is and they'll adapt (as well as teach you what you need to know)

sparda: the other hilarious thing is when they spend an eternity finding their stupid extracare card or credit card...and then when you suggest inputting their phone number they say "no no...it's in here somewhere" and take another eternity. sigh.

working at CVS for 2 years myself, the best advice i can give you is to read the screen. Sounds simple but everything you need to know is on the screen. As for the insurance isssues you run into, the best thing to do is just call the number it gives you and try your best, it gets easier the more you do it. Good luck

I've learned to manipulate the system a lot when it comes to rejections. It could get really bad if we get audited though, out of all the technicians, I probably do more overrides in my 2 days a week compared what someone would do in a whole year.

Insurance says high dose? No problem, Prescriber consulted, filled prescription as is, written, other override. I actually never call the doctor for these things. The doctor wrote that dosage for a reason, there is no point in wasting the doctor's, mines, and the patients time.

Prior authorization? No problem, I start typing in known PA numbers until I hit one.

A patient lost their 3 month supplies on their 5 medications, no problem, override away baby.

My pharmacy manager doesn't seem to care about it. I don't care about the district manager or regional manager. If anything, the ratings that patients have given us have gone up because of the amount of overrides we do.

How do you do consultation as a tech? I thought that was illegal and the entire point of having a distinction between pharmacist and tech.

Should have mentioned OTC consultation, I read up on the drug monographs. Like every week, I would print out 10-20 monographs and take them home.

Techs can't consult on OTCs and Rx drugs. They cannot give out any drug advice.

Techs can give advice one example is if it is written on the box you can tell it to a patient the other thing about OTC counseling it can be done under the supervision of the pharmacist which can be used loosely. I only know about how this works in utah though I am not sure how other states work.
Oh and I do know this for a fact I contacted utah's DOPL and sent them a email asking just about this I even gave the example that if someone comes to the counter and asks what do I recomend for cold sores I can tell them abreva as long as the pharmacist is comfortable with me doing so. Key item there the pharmacist must be ok with you doing it since if you give out bad advice it will come back to them. So most techs never get the chance to counsel because of this.
