i have sent individual letters via snail mail yet no replies.. can someone give me advice? what should i do ? how did you go about shadowing and what did you do to obtain a letter of recommendation?

I found phone numbers and gave them a call. Always better than snail mail. Maybe even try sending them an email.

I sent snail mail too, one replied with a phone call to set up a time and day etc.

Another DO that I was very interested in shadowing never responded so a few months later I brought a letter in an envelope and hand delivered it at his office-he ended up writing my LOR and was a great mentor. They are very busy so give them some time to get the letters and get around to calling you, and if you don't hear from anyone in the next few weeks or months perhaps hand deliver a couple of letters to offices.

A lot of time its a shot in the dark who replies and who doesn't so make sure you send out letters to 5+ docs so you have a good chance at one responding.

I went door to door and begged. Go to the DO website, make a list of ten, and start driving. Dress up. Take your resume so they'll know you're legit.

This. I actually wrote a letter (one paragraph) addressed specifically to Dr. X explaining who I was and why I wanted to shadow them, including my contact info, put it in a sealed envelope, and politely asked the receptionist to hand it to the doctor.

Go door to door and beg. That is what I did, still took me two months to find one.

I knew the DO and it took three calls and an email before he responded. And another month to set up a shadowing time. You need to be persistent and professional

Lots of cold calls did the trick for me. Try to look for physicians with great reviews on those physician rating sites. They seem to be more receptive to having students follow them around.

People are too shy.

Go to this website...select your area and search all. http://www.osteopathic.org/osteopathic-health/Pages/find-a-do-search.aspx

Call every single one of the DO's offices asking to speak to the office manager. Introduce yourself over the phone to the office manager, ask if the DO allows shadowing at his/her office. Offer to provide a CV. You will very likely get more shadowing experiences than you have time for.
