Just how competitive are these fellowships that offer strong cosmetics training? How does it compare to landing a derm residency spot? I've heard conflicting opinions verbally, and wanted to see what those on the boards thought. For example, let's say you come from an average derm program and you perform at an average level during residency? Is it difficult? Do you have to be willing to move to Alaska?
Does EVERYBODY want to do one of these fellowships if they can get one, or are enough people pretty content to just go into derm practice after residency? Are the fellowships with more cosmetics harder to get than the more MOHS/academic oriented? Is MOHS really substantially less lucrative now than it once was? Perhaps those who really just want to make $$ and do cosmetics procedures skip the whole fellowship thing and learn on the job to maximize lifetime earning? Or do they not want to deal with the whole acgme process and just go for a non-official cosmetic/laser fellowship?
And finally, how do you get these fellowships? Is it just as simple as performing well during residency?
