I am trying to shadow a specific doctor and I have her contact information. Is it a necessity call her, or is it appropriate to email her so she can address it at her leisure?

Not everyone is diligent about checking their email. Unless you are comfortable with waiting for a response, give her a call. I wouldn't want to wait for an email response only to find out that it was a lost cause.

I would email, wait a week, and then call.

Thanks for your input guys. I'm not in any particular rush to get in her office, I will have to wait until after the end of semester. So, I'll try emailing her, then call.

I would call the office manager and see if this doctor takes people to shadow. They would know and can usually give you an answer quite quickly. That way too, the doctor isn't put on the spot if they tell you no, the mgr will let you know either way.

Write an email and give the doc a chance to reply (few days) then call and leave a message with the front desk (and be nice or she might lose the message).

The one thing I did that finally got me noticed was including my CV with my email to the docs.
