I've been reading through many of the old threads to get an idea of the best FP residency programs and especially the ones that emphasize procedural training. I know that if I want to go into FP I am going to want to do lots and lots of procedures. So were are the best places to get as much procedure training as possible? Most of the old posts claim Ventura and various west coast programs. I would love to go there, but I've heard its difficult to get into west coast programs if you're not from there. Is this true? And if so, what scores, etc does it take to get into a place like Ventura? Are there any other extremely good procedure oriented residency programs in the midwest or east coast area? Please help!!

there are actually many fp programs that do procedures. they just dont advertise that much. the ones that will probably do more procedures or have a dedicated structured procedure clinic or rotation.

i too am interested in procedures. i just finished interviewing for fp residency in the midwest....michigan. what i found is most do the basic stuff like minor derm surgery, joint injections, and culposcopy. youll find a few that do vasectomies and stress testing. those that dont do them in the fp clinic will usually hook u up with an elective month in say a urology office that is known to train fp residents in vasectomies or a cardiologist that has or will train fp residents to do stress testing. ask the program when you interview what their experience has been with either doing these things in the office or setting something up for u with a doc on an elective that will teach you these things.

i will tell you that Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan and Providence Hospital in SOuthfield, MI have dedicated procedure clinic months where their second year residents rotate through and do the scheduled procedures like gyn cryosurgery, derm surg, casting, etc.

hope this helps..main thing is to ask the residents and program director what they do as far as procedures. Providence Hospital for example has a sports medicine doc on staff that does tons of joint injections in the clinic.

good luck!
