Procedures Intern year

what up everyone...been few months into prelim yr...having done my critical care rotation...i have noticed that i havent gotten many procedures under my belt--or will for that matter (central lines, iv's, etc...) think this puts me at a disadv. when starting anesthesia residency? im tryin to get procedures, but medicine residents senior to me need them, since they log them and need to fulfill a certain number. maybe i should hustle for them harder?? im tired of hustlin mannnn, lol! hope others are havin better luck.

I wouldn't worry. Your prog plans on you knowing nothing.

There are vast differences in 1st yr procedures. I am on my second month of ICU. I also did an anes elective.

We do not have fellows in our ICU so the intern gets all procedures. All but 4 intubations were on anes elective though.

Many people have done no lines prior to CA-1.

Don't worry about procedures too much as an intern.. As a CA3 I was able to supervise many of our incoming CA1's and can tell you that intern experiences differ vastly. As a CA1 you will do FAR more procedures (epiudurals, a-lines, CVP's) in your first few months than you will ever be exposed to as an intern.. No one I know of expects new CA1's to be experts, or for that matter even terribly proficient at procedures. This is because intern experiences differ vastly. I have seen new residents who did 30 central lines as an intern, and those who did NONE! Bottom line: You will be fine and will get plenty of exposure in your anesthesology residency.

I am getting very few procedures - I hope what your saying is true accross the board for programs. But I can put ng tubes in with my eyes closed😴

The fewer procedures you do as an intern, the less retraining will be required to use the technique of your seniors and attendings.

Shouldn't you be learning MEDICINE during intern year anyway?
