I'm going to be working about 60-70 hours a week this summer. One job is at mayo clinic, but it's not research-oriented or patient-oriented in any way (major bummer). My other job is just at a retail outlet, no significance there.

I realize it's a productive way in the sense of earning money and whatnot, but should I be looking to do other things instead? I'm considering dumping the other job (not mayo clinic) that I would be at 20-30 hours a week and pursuing various volunteering gigs instead. Which route sounds more solid?

Even if you need the money enough to keep both jobs, it's hard to imagine you couldn't spend two hours twice a week volunteering at a medical and nonmedical organization.

But two jobs=major burnout by the time fall classes begin. If you can drop one, you could get in shadowing, if you need more, and broaden your horizens in terms of getting in more variety/number of hours of other expected ECs. It would make for a more refreshing and productive summer.

Take some time out of what looks like a busy summer and shadow some doctors at the Mayo Clinic. Use any and all contacts you have to get your foot in the door and to connect with the MDs. Your goal will be to find out what their lives are like, and whether medicine is really what you want to do with your life. Seek out the medical students -- they often have a lot of advice to give, and can connect you with even more shadowing opportunities.

Good luck! (and don't forget to rest up and have fun before the Fall semester!)

Mayo is pretty stubborn about shadowing.. I've asked a few docs and all have declined (ouch)
