I have my earlobes pierced and stretched to 2g (6.5mm). I've had issues with metal in my lobes, so I've worn glass, stone, and wood jewelry instead of standard gauge earrings. My plugs are generally conservative-looking, but I'm not sure what type of plugs I can wear that would go with a business suit for interviews and such. I've thought of perhaps plain black stone or wood.

Any ideas? A lot of people seem freaked out by stretched earlobes, so I don't want to draw attention to them.

If I were you, I'd consider covering them up...if your hair is not too short, find a hairstyle that'd let you cover them up - if you are a woman, you can also consider a neat silk headscarf or ear clips that are big enough to cover them. I'm not a 60-year old white man on an adcom, and even I would find them to be shocking if I saw them on a doctor/lawyer/teacher. You'd hate to be rejected because an adcom member found them disagreeable with the professional image of a physician.

Can you minimize their appearance by wearing flesh colored stone?

If not that, maybe a simple solid color stone would work (like something opal-looking). At 6.5mm that might end up looking like a large, circular earring, not a plug.

I agree, I'd definitely try to make them unnoticeable if possible. And that's not a judgment on you for having gauged ears or anything, it's not my preference, but I'm not a playa-hater 🙂 Old doctors are playa-haters sometimes though, so it might work against you if they're noticed. I'd try to find a flesh toned rubber plug or something.

why not wear nothing at all? 6.5 mm is pretty small, so it probably won't be noticed. I saw this dude with a serious disc in his ear on the train, must have been a good inch across, you can't hide that ****.

Just wanted to say that I totally heart this post. It's always so nice knowing that there are other...er... alternativey type folk in this with me. 😉

And I second the flesh colored idea. My best friend just had his ears stretched for the first time a few weeks ago and I didn't notice for *days* because the stone color is so similar to his natural skin tone.

Such a shame that this question even has to be posted. Ugh.

Good luck!

I agree with you to an extent. It would be nice if academic decisions were not based on things like this. However, one thing that the 'alternativey' crowd should start thinking about, is the fact that you are training to enter a profession that by definition has to interact with the masses. Your job security and success will be in large part determined by how comfortable your patients are with you, how much they trust you, and how much they like you. The third will trump the first two once they get to know you, as the comfort and trust will lead to affection. However, you have to get the patient established in the first place. And there are many many people out there who will not be comfortable with or trust people with large conspicuous tats, piercings, plugs, etc. That's something that will need to be respected; after all, it's the physician's duty to make the patient comfortable, not the patient's duty to be accepting of the doc's body mods. Again, not a judgment about people who choose to make these mods, just an observation you may want to start thinking about now, so that when you start dealing with patients you'll have a plan in place.

yea 6.5s arent that big at all - i say keep em in and yeah go with the black stone - it doesnt look all trashy or anything and maybe a black suit with that or say if you're wearin a tie with black on it.

I got a friend that looks great with a suit and plugs on haha it just looks right - classy n not trashy at all. you'll be fine i think itd be a nice change from short hair/clean shaven marine look
