So today my mom was walking and got into conversation with one of our neighbors, he said his child just got into PT school and that he spent a good amount of money on a "prep guy" that helps with interviews and preparing for the application process and overall having the best "you" to present. Has anyone ever heard of this or know how useful it is or if its worth the money?

I have (heard of one). My previous boss used one for his kids and highly recommended the guy. Biggest joke ever.

I never used one, but from what he told me, all they do is coach you through the process. That includes financial aid information, application process, and writing a statement of purpose.

I find that whole service ridiculous and predatory. If you can't figure it out, why should you do an adult thing like college?

Definitely have heard of these services. Didn't know it extended to grad schools, but I suppose why not. Usually they target high school kids as you can probably guess. If you still need these guys for grad school though...I think you may need to re-prioritize some life skills...such as learning to utilize the Internet.

There are free resources surrounding you already: the internet, peers and this blog. I don't think hiring a "prep guy" is a great investment. Save that money for grad school or food, lol

Exactly. Most applicants are 22 or older and should be entering the work force with these skills. This board was more useful in the application process than anyone I could have utilized...and it was free.

I agree with the rest on this thread.... a "prep guy is just an added cost that is unnecessarily needed". Many people have received acceptances from schools without the use of a prep guy. And any information regarding the application cycle can be easily discovered through research and forums. As far as writing your personal statement, there are many free programs and resources out there that will take a look at your essay and help improve it. What's important to focus on are your cGPA, pGPA, GRE score, and observation hours. Make certain that they are high as you can get them to be. The applicant pool have increasingly been more competitive these past few years. Although difficult, it is possible to get into a good school. This year, I've been accepted at a few schools and never used a prep guy. Many other people have achieved the same goal and I'm pretty sure that 99% of us have not used a prep guy.

So to answer your question.... a prep guy is NOT worth it.
