I am finishing my dissertation in psychology this year and I just had a conversation with a chair of Psychiatry department at a school. He asked me about my plans after graduation and I told him that I am interested to do post doctoral fellowship in psychiatry at medical school. He suggested that I also think about faculty position at medical school.
I know that this forum includes people who might be too busy with residency right now to know about appointment at medical school but he offers me full time with kind of arrangement of being paid 50% from the school and the rest will be paid through psychotherapy work at the hospital. At the same time he suggested that I could work at the school forever which I assume means tenure track. I am interested in research and I have experience in teaching and wouldn't mind to teach although my interest is in post-doctoral fellowship so I can invest my time in my research. Is anyone familiar with this type of appointment of 50% of the salary?. I intend down the road to discuss this with him again and express my interest in full-time professor assistant position.

I think arrangements for academic psychiatrist are similar- low salary with added income expected from research, speaking engagements, writing books, etc.

I was offered a faculty position that had a base salary around 70% of what I was offered elsewhere (for purely clinical positions). You need to get specifics in writing. Our university kept 100% of all psychotherapy and clinic income and some of the $ brought in from research. I didn't stay because I preferred 100% clinical work.

I could have this job forever? Right...

1. You arent doing a post-doc in psychiatry. You aren't a psychiatrist. Lets be clear about that first.

2. You are describing being a practicing psychologist withiin a psychiatry department. Your funding is likely to come from variety of sources: the medical school, grants, clinical billing. Not sure what the big mystery is here?

3. I would make sure you understand the expectations for advancement (assistant-associate-full professor) if this position is indeed a tenure track position.

Hi.
Thanks for posting this thread. I have a similar offer from psychiatry department and they offered me 50% as well. I realize that some time has passed since you`ve posted this post. I was wondering if you know 50% of which department salary, psychology or psychiatry?
