(Question/venting) Months ago I asked 3 professors to write me a LOR and all agreed. I've recieved both of the others. But my Genetics professor has not contacted me at all, nor responded to me emails. Which makes me really worried/upset. I made an A+ in his class, attended everyday, and participated in discussions and answered quesitons. So I don't know what I did wrong.🙁 My first choice school's deadline is literally in a month, so I would think it is too late to ask someone else.It would suck to have worked so hard, and not even be eligible to apply to the school I really want to attend. What should I do? what are my options?

One month is not too short of notice to ask someone else. It could just be that September is the start of a new semester and he's swamped and flaking out on you a bit..I've been having a bit of the same problem. Don't delay on finding him in person though so you can find out for sure.

I had the same issue and the person responded back in email saying they would get around to it. This went back and forth for two months. I decided to keep it pending in my pharmcas application, went to another professor and waited until he completed the letter, making it my third letter. I then canceled the request for the original professor that never got around to it. When you cancel it, it will send them an email informing them that you declined to have them write your letter of recommendation now. I would suggest finding another person to write your letter, but dont' take this professor off the list until you have it completed by the new person. After all, they might eventually get around to it. All the best

That's harsh. He bailed on you. At least he should have notified you in order to give you enough time to be able to alter your plans.

Well said. I couldn't answer without being sarcastic.
Really you couldn't? Some ideas would have been to maybe share your personal experience, or how to best approach a professor in person thats ignored emails, or how approach a new professor with a month time limit. I'll figure it out though, I was just looking for some support and advice.

but I appreciate the others that replied though, thanks.

Yeah, I wanted to post helpful advice, but I kept going back to comments like, "It means you can't go to pharmacy school." I am a sarcastic person though, it is one of my main faults. I am glad other people answered your question to your satisfaction. 👍

🙂

hahah Owelgrad please attend my funeral! LMAO

Sucks when this happens. Same thing happened to me with my organic chemistry professor. I got As in both ochem 1 and 2, went to every class, and frequently went to office hours. The professor ended up getting to know me pretty well, so I thought I was going to get a great letter. I sent the request well in advance (about 3 months before the deadline) and even saw her in person as a reminder. Two months go by and nothing. So I send another email about it and she tells me that she'll get to it in a couple days. Two more weeks go by but still nothing. I was really upset. I ended up getting my last letter from another source. Anyway, the lesson is be prepared to have a backup. Some people are just unreliable.

Owlegrad, I regret to inform you that sarcasm is against SDN rules, and warrants the issue of a warning. I am confident of this because I recently received a warning for my own use of sarcasm by none other than yourself. Talk about hypocrisy.

I am just wondering why you could not figure this out on your own and I do not mean that to be mean. Your name is NavyPharm, so either you were prior Navy or you plan on going into the military.... Either way, you should be able to solve these simple problems.

I am curious, do you really want to know the answer? Or are you trying to imply something about her intelligence?

Saw this thread--

I was in the top 3 of my class for Orgo 1--and top 5 in Orgo 2.
Constantly tutored others students.

Talked to my prof about LoRs multiple times. Now she doesn't email.

So dumb.

This is one of those life skills. You need to learn to talk to people. I like the in person idea.

"Conflict" is never easy but you've got to do it.

.

Exactly. Email is killing comms skills.

For all my letters of recommendation I emailed my tutors first to see if they would be happy and then met up with in person to discuss it. It's harder to say 'you forgot' the deadline or the emails got lost when someone told you in person.

Also I told a white lie to my tutors and given them the deadline a month ahead of when it supposed to be in case 'eventualities' happen. If questioned my excuse will be it "Improves my chance of a scholarship with X school/college."

Prepare for the worst and you'll nearly always be pleasantly surprised.

There are so many threads and websites explaining the best way to ask a professor for a lor under normal circumstances alone...so i'm guesing a lot of people are curious aswell so not sure what to tell you...

But anyways I talked to my prof in person. He hadn't even read my emails lol, and he was happy to still write me a lor 🙂
