Anyone else feel COMPLETELY underqualified for med school? I don't know how I got in, and I already feel 15 steps behind everyone else. Anyone share my feelings?

you know what man, who cares? you're all on a level playing field now! mcat scores, gpa, ECs, etc. are all irrelevant!

the 1/150 ranked person from your medical school will be called doctor in 4 years from now. and what about #150/150?

doctor.

Damn right. Thanks for the awesome words!

Did you mean inequity? Iniquity means being evil / wicked. Haha so I definitely thought this thread would be about something else!

Yeah same here! Thought it'd be full of liberals who wanted to socialize medicine.

Like others have said, don't worry about it. As soon as you start, everybody will be 15 steps behind together. Welcome to med school!

Iniquity would be the thread about evil.

Inequity would be the socialized medicine thread.

How about inadequacy, maybe?

Nope. It's med school, not being the Pope...

Unless you applied to the Vatican City College of Medicine (VCCoM). I'm pretty sure they have a 38 year combined MD/Cardinal program.

On point, the AAMC has assembled the most formidable and ridiculous filter of people currently operating in the world today. We know it as 'the application process'. AMCAS, MCAT, Secondaries, Essays, Interviews, LoRs, LoIs, etc. The fact that you got through the filter and into a medical school means you are definitely qualified to be there; many of the people who got stuck in the filter could have probably succeeded as well. Best of luck, you earned it!

I interviewed there. I was doing good until I banged my shin on the table. One GD it and they look at you like you showed up with your wang hanging out...

Lol, yep. And the 'hypothetical' questions on euthanasia and abortion clearly aren't all that 'hypothetical' at VCCoM. If you find yourself answering in more than 3 words, it's wrong.

+1 👍

OP, you were accepted bc you deserve it... don't start med school with feelings of inadequacy bc it WILL hold you back... I mean, I'm sure it's normal to feel this way, but don't dwell on it! Remind yourself that you worked hard to get to where you are and that you DO deserve this...NOW, get ready for sleepless nights spent studying and a lifetime of learning 😛

Is the filter any tougher than it's been for the past 30 or 40 years? And thank goodness they've made it such a tough process (hopefully I will find most med students to be smart). But remember that a small few (around 2 or 3% at most medical schools) don't get through it. Secondaries, essays, interviews, and LORs do not really speak to how prepared a student is for the intellectual task of completing medical school.

Good answers:

"Clearly blasphemy."
"Absolutely damnable."
"Good heavens, no!"

Bad answers:

"Well, that depends..."

You're kidding, but there are people who join the Jesuits as physicians. Minimum of 7 years medical training + 11 years priestly formation just to start.

And then you make 8K/year for the rest of your life.

I read somewhere (on sdn)...
What do you call the last person in med school..

The Defendant...

hmmmm...lol jk jk

feeling underqualified doesn't go away until you're about PGY-15. I'm halfway through and feel that way often, so do most my residents. It's probably better than feeling grossly overqualified 👍

First, I know how you feel. I felt very similarly before starting school...even had anxiety attacks the summer before. Woo!

Second, I hate to say this but everyone is NOT on a level playing field when you start school. I was a Philosophy major...I had to study my ass off for our first block (cell bio/genetics) while everyone else was out partying. There will be people in your class who study for a couple hours and honor everything, while you may need to study 8 hours a day to pass. There will be people in your class that are just so brilliant much of your energy first year will be devoted to trying to feel less inadequate. There will be people who just seem to click with patients while you're fumbling with your next question.

Know that all this will happen to many medical students. Know that the vast majority of med students will graduate and get a residency somewhere, and most residents finish residency, become board-certified, and land jobs. I promise, your energy will be best spent doing the best that YOU can and not comparing yourself to others. There are always going to be things that you're worse at than others and things you're better at. Don't make your self-worth be all about grades and scores...you'll make yourself miserable.
