I am having difficulty with a department chairman writing slanderous letters about me as part of the credentialing process when I apply for positions. I do not know what I did to offend this program director but I completed the fellowship and received a certificate. I never received a derogatory performance review.

When I was a fellow this new department chairman intervened all of the residents and fellows to ask us what we thought about the program. I was honest and told him that I was very disappointed with it since it was of no educational value and was a total waste of time. He initially offered to help letting me change rotations and rotate with attending that did interesting case and has some interest in teaching. However the bad attending who didn't teach and resented loosing thier free labor started whining so the department chairman decided to do nothing and started to blame me for requesting to do interesting cases. I would have dropped out but the contract required a 4 month notice and not completing a fellowship is a red flag so I shut up and completed the program.

For the first four years after leaving the program I had received neutral or non negative responses in credentialing by this department chairman but now he has decided to instead send out a full page of libelous statements he can't prove.

I have hired a lawyer to sue this department chairman but I doubt it will do much good.

Does anyone know how to shut this department chairman up?

What kind of credentialing requires letters from your fellowship chairman over 4 years after completing it? Just curious.

This is part of the hospital credential process. I would never ask for a letter of recommendation for this program chairman.

When you apply for a job, hospital privileges, or some state licences they feel the need to send a letter requesting credentials verification to everywhere you every worked, held privileges and every place that you trained. This is done secretly and most of the time if they find anything remotely negative about you they will drop you instantly, never say why and start looking for someone else.

I see. Have you spoken to him about it?

Talking to him would be a waste of time it will take weeks and dozens of calls to get past his secretary, and then he will deny everything and continue sending out this letter.

Threaten him with sexual harrassment. That'll shut him up.

Seriously, I would see if you have any friends at your old program and ask through the grapevine why this guy is harrassing you. You might get some insight that way.

You might send a letter to the ACGME, lodge a formal complaint, and try to get them to find out why he's slandering you. Make sure to get copies of your file and show them you had no bad reviews. Also consider a formal complaint with the Dean of the medical school or the hospital CMO.

Good luck

It is sad how some sob can have so much conctrol over someone after 4 years of completing the fellowship.

I think you attorney can sue, and you should pursue that more than anything else. He will be required to show up in court, hire an attorney, and prove his allegations. It will cost him and the program time and money.

Stick that up his ass and he will back off because he has to put effort into it. Right now he has a letter typed up by his secretary and she just duplicates it when he needs one.

Think about what he will have to do to prove what he is saying. he will have to bring all the attendings into it. They will have to come to court and waiste their time. The old fellows have to do the same.

If you sue this guy for slander, he will fight until he finds out that it is no longer worth his efforts. Then he will back off. You can even sue the program and get paid for lost time and wages due to this action.

Don't back off, this is your life. Stick it to him. Find a tough lawyer.

You worked hard to get to where you are and it is very irresponsible of him to mess around with your life.

The only way he has a right to do that, is if he is right. So, if you know for sure you did not do anything wrong, then go after him.
