Didn't see that we had a program impressions thread started yet for this season so I figured I would start one 🙂🙂🙂

Feel free to write the program name with the pros/cons/overall impressions for each as you interview or based on what you know about the program already.

Also, if people don't want to post as themselves, feel free to PM me your review, and I'll post it anonymously.

Another poster, from another thread, re: Columbia (NYC):

"Impression: Great all around program, good mix of research and clinical powerhouse, fellows appear happy and nice, though they seem homogenous in terms of their background. essentially everyone is either from BW, MGH, hopkins, ucsf or columbia. Chief is a pure clinician and the PD is a pure researcher.

In terms of their departments:
Cath: world class, very innovative and busy, lots of structural (PARTNERS), strong congenital and peripheral, heavy PCI volume and alot of CTO exposure. CRF and TCT are run out of this lab so a ton of trials going on and a ton of clinical research opportunity
Heart Failure: world class, impressive transplant and mechanical support program, alot of ECMO and VADs (REMATCH), very very very busy. Seems that their VAD program is so large that it is becoming its own thing.
EP: a bit disappointing, faculty seem nice but not much in terms of cutting edge stuff, volume is ok, three rooms. appendage closures are done by the cath lab, not by EP. There is alot of expoosure to VT since the VAD population is so huge there.
Echo: very strong, high volume, exposure to alot of structural heart disease through the cath lab, lots of publications (WARCEF)
Nuclear: strong, pushing PET essentially over SPECT, everyone is doing research
CT/MRI: VERY WEAK, really the low point in the program and they recognize it. not sure if anything is being done to rectify it
Prevent: very strong lipids group (ACCORD), busy primary cardiology clinic with an NP, not sure about rehab
Congenital: very strong, very busy, they seem to be exposed to a large congenital population, and they have a fellowship in it, three dedicated CT surgeons, large peds group, active cath lab

For me, positive points:
-T32 training grant, used by a ton of fellows, salary support increased over NIH scale to ACGME scale by the dept. great research opportunities, but can take it to another institution if you need to
-Good track record for getting K grants.
-Also very family friendly program. Four women last year gave birth in the fellowship, seems like everyone has kids and there is alot of internal moonlighting for extra money to have a family
-food was ridiculous, no french wings though,
-can get level 2's without restriction
-fellows seem like a social cohesive bunch

Negative points
-Call sounds horrible, like really bad and you have it all three years, but you do go home the next morning
-hospital sounds dysfunctional, not sure how the residents are
-washington heights sounds bad
-not sure how good mentorship is there, sounds like sink or swim
-seems like a club for people with elite pedigree, some level of arrogance
-CT/MRI exposure
-cannot incorporate a subspecialty year if you are doing the four year research track like at other institutions.

overall: would have been nice, but doubt I will be able to match here.
looking forward to my other nyc interviews.
would appreciate if others could write in their thoughts about their experiences on the interview trail (especially nyc)"

Lets try to consolidate all program impressions in this thread as everyone is going through the interviews so its easy for everyone to browse through. if anyone wants to post anon, you can also pm me and i'll post for you.

Another anonymous:

"Temple

Impression: Clinically focussed program that serves a large underserved population. Level 2/3 in majority of areas. Not much emphasis on research.

Cath: Seem to get good experience/autonomy, 2 or 3 cath labs which are going to be redone in the next couple of years. Most fellows go elsewhere if pursuing interventional however. Recently started TAVR but low numbers.

HF: Do some transplant/LVAD but didn't seem like it was a robust program. Per program, have the largest number of ICU beds among the Philadelphia program. Have a dedicated CCU attending.

Imaging: Not sure about cardiac MR/CT. Lvl 3 echo if you want. Currently VP of Board of Directors for ASE is now at Temple (previously from Penn).

Positive:
-Lvl 2/3 in whatever you want
-Nice faculty
-Underserved population

Cons:
-Location (rough area of philly)
-Little emphasis on research"

Another anon impression:

UCSF Cardiology Program

- TOP NOTCH research program:
** T32 grants available
** 4 years total (1 yr not ACGME funded but funded by program itself)
** all fellows get K-award funded (or get equivalent career awards from AHA etc)
** all fellows have to submit grant proposal for such an award (even if they are going into clinical practice), just to learn from the process
** UCSF Masters in Clinical Research via T.I.C.R program. Basically, this is a masters program in which they support you in every stage of planning and running a clinical research project (including applying for grant funding).
- Strong clinical program:
** they get their numbers for level 2
** they see patients at 3 different hospital types (including SFGH, VA, UCSF Medical Center) serving 3 different populations.
** Top EP training. Weak in interventional (no TAVR). Decent Heart Failure/VAD/Transplant, but just 3 heart failure faculty Don't know enough about echo/CT/MR to make a comment.
** Preventative Cardiology Fellowship (not ACGME accredited)
- STRONG GLOBAL HEALTH PRESENCE:
** new Global Health Institute being built (as a building)
** Funding for MPH @ UC Berkley Vs MS in global health @ UCSF
** Clinical Scholars program provides funding/mentorship for global health research for fellows/junior faculty

Miscellaneous info:
EXPENSIVE city
q4 call schedule (q2 when at SFGH)
Open ICU
Most fellows from Hopkins or UCSF (don't think there is any diversity in terms of home institutions of fellows).

Did anyone interview at Loyola this week? What time did the interview day end?

Any programs that had any red flags? Unhappy fellows?

As more people respond, hopefully we will have a better of idea of that...

Over 3000 views and only 10 replies...🙁 common everyone, post your impression.
