so here are the number of PGY 1 positions offered by each program across the US. the amount of positions offered certainly appears to vary from year to year, so this does not necessarily reflect what programs are offering this year. I merely used the number of positions offered last year, or the amount of PGY 1 residents said program has. i got the data from FREIDA, and if it wasn't available there i went to the department website and gathered what i could. if you see an inaccuracy, or have information i could not obtain, please post!

i want a cookie, damnit 🙂

i got tired and gave up around pennsylvania . . . maybe we can pull a group effort and other people here can fill in the remaining data

We have 15 (!) openings for the fall, some of which I think are upper level spots. It's a record since not only did we get approval for more spots from the ACGME, but we have a large class graduating this year (remnant of the 5 to 4 year transition).

This is the official list from the NRMP of available positions for the 2008 match. This does not include positions that will be available outside of the match. It took me all of 3 seconds to copy and paste from NRMP directory. 🙂

haha, oh deary dear . . . i definitely wasted a lot of my own time:laugh: but hey, it allowed me to drink coffee, not think too much, and listen to an entire episode of a prairie home companion . . . so its not a total bust. besides, i ended up looking at programs i would never have looked into otherwise, and i ended up learning a thing or two . . .

thanks for the authority figures pathstudent

THe concentration of residents being trained in Boston and San Jose-San Francisco metros are insane. Boston is over 20 and SJ-SF is 18. Hopefully most of those people want to stay in academics, but can academia even absorb that many per year? Those cities are big, but they are not big. By comparison Phoenix AZ is just slightly smaller and they are are only kicking out 4 per year. Chicago and Philadelphia are out of control too.

right, i notice the same thing about other fields in boston too. i mean for heaven's sake, i know bostonians are defective, but they can't have that much wrong with them . . . ?

yeah, I count about 39 positions for boston alone 😱

I think it's even higher for Boston. You have BI, BWH, MGH, Tufts, and BU all in Boston. I counted 35 positiions from the NRMP list that was just posted. It's insane really.

considering posts we've seen from residents are various boston area programs, i don't think there's a shortage of material at any of those sites. boston is the major city in new england, and aside from its own population base surely draws in referrals from smaller hospitals northward up to the canadian border.

i haven't really seen a great correlation between population and residency spot. look at omaha - 6 spots between creighton and UN, for a city with around 800,000 people. compare that to tampa, where there are 4 spots at USF for a metro area of 2.6 million (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_United_States_Metropolitan_Statistical_Areas). i think is all due to the fact that in the past far few people lived in the south and southwest US, but with the advent of reliable air conditioning, the southward migration began.

Don't confuse the distribution of TRAINING POSITIONS (dependent on places that want to put effort into education, of which there are many in Boston) with SERVICE POSITIONS (doing the work at all institutions not just those with educational missions & with a better correlation with population base). You might just as easily wonder why there are so many more medical students in Boston than in many other cities of comparable size.

From a visit to Boston, you realize that higher education & academic medicine are major businesses in the city. They probably have a higher profile there than just about anywhere else (both because of the prominence of the institutions and the relative lack of other competing industries).

I would mention for people like Arctic Char who would be applying next year that the numbers are not necessarily always going to be the same.

For example, Indiana typically has 5 spots, but in the match they seem to be only offering 4 this year. So they may have already taken somebody outside of the match or for some reason they are doing something else with one spot. Likewise, Allegheny General is supposed to have 4 spots next year but only 1 this year.

Some of the smaller programs will have lopsided class sizes of residents. For example, if they are allotted 12 total, they start out having 3 per class.

3 3 3 3

Then somebody drops out of residency and they take a new PGY1.

4 2 3 3

Over the years these weird things can accumulate and a program might have

5 1 4 2

Anyway, just something to be aware of. It seems to me that these programs may be smaller ones and/or ones where there is no PA assistance, so they need to have residents to handle all the grossing.

yeah i kind of figured thats how it worked. thats why, for some programs, i put "X total, divide by 4 years . . . "

it definitely seems to vary

THe concentration of residents being trained in Boston and San Jose-San Francisco metros are insane. Boston is over 20 and SJ-SF is 18. Hopefully most of those people want to stay in academics, but can academia even absorb that many per year? Those cities are big, but they are not big. By comparison Phoenix AZ is just slightly smaller and they are are only kicking out 4 per year. Chicago and Philadelphia are out of control too.

Houston/Galveston area in Texas has 23 spots... Also has 3 medical schools with about 200 students/class each.
