Programs that use Phorcas for the management of their PGY1/2 residency applications usually post that they want 3 letters of recommendation (aka references) in addition to there usual requirements. The question is what does a program do if they receive 4 references instead of 3 from an applicant? Also why does Phorcas allow applicants to add references to submitted applications before and after the deadline but not allow for removal of excess references?

They either: do nothing, read the additonal reference, don't read it, or toss your application for failing to follow directions.

I frequently score LORs for our residency program. We require three letters. I am aware that other programs require four so I certainly don't "toss" any application for not following directions. I will typically read whichever three letters are from actual clinical preceptors and ignore one from faculty. Others might just read the first three letters that appear on the website and ignore the fourth. I wouldn't worry about it since as an applicant it's not really something you have control over unless you only apply to programs that require three. Personally, reading hundreds of LORs is not my idea of fun so I think programs that ask for four are out of their minds.
