Although I am only an MS-II I wanted to ask for some advice. I am interested in psychiatry and neurology. I am very confident that if I just went either straight psych OR neuro I could match into a high-caliber program (I say this because I've been told that these two fields are not very competitive). However, as of right now I would LOVE to do a combined psych/neuro residency. However, these are competitive and I have less of a chance of getting into one of the top combined programs. So, my question is basically...do you think I will use a dual certification in these two fields or tend to only practice one of the two after all is said and done...and if not...do you think I should forfeit an at least somewhat-sure high-caliber match in leiu of trying to match for a combined position? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Why have you already talked yourself out of trying for the residency you really want by your second year????? You don't have to sacrifice applying to one for another. If you are still worried when you apply, you can rank the less competetive programs as well as the competetive ones. Just make certain that you would be happy at the programs you rank.

Actually, you can still be dual board certified in psych/neuro even at a program that does not officially bill itself as a psych/neuro combined.

Before you interview, ask whether or not this is possible. If they say no, do not ask about it during your interview (it will look bad if you are interested in something they do not provide). If it's possible, ask extensive questions at your interview (it will give you something to talk about and will show your interest and enthusiasm in their program).

Goodluck.
