Any opinions about the Michigan programs (U Michigan; Henry Ford Hosp – Detroit; Wayne State University; W. Beaumont-Detroit)? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Michigan is sweet. Definitely apply and interview there. I didn't match there, but would have been overjoyed to end up there. Great training. Great benefits. Big Ten football. What else do you need?

WSU is a good sleeper program. High volume, good attending support, lots of cataract surgery; residents easily break 100 class 1 cases and with a little effort, 150.
There is a resident's clinic, which is good, if you want to do surgeries. There is a research department. Residents typically do well on their boards and the program has had a good history of getting interested graduates decent fellowship placements. It is in downtown Detroit, which is a negative, but you get over it. Most residents live in Southfield, Birmingham or Royal Oak.

I interviewed at WSU this year and the PD gave us the surgical #s for a "typical" resident that graduated last year. He was only able to get 87 class I cataracts and was going into comprehensive.

Also, three current residents there told me it was very difficult to get over 100 class I phacos.

Call up the graduates yourself and get their stories, if you can. I know a few of them from my fellowship and, unless standards have slipped, the surgery numbers are higher. Although this is going back a while, I personally staffed residents there whose numbers broke 150. Even the laid-back ones got at least 100.

How about other programs in Michigan, such as William Beaumont Hospital - Detroit and Henry Ford Hospital – Detroit?
