For those of you who have interviewed, can anyone comment on any of the following?

1. Chapel Hill
2. Duke
3. Wake Forest
4. East Carolina U.
5. any other program in the SE or Mid-Atlantic area

I'm just trying to get an idea (good or bad) about any of these programs. Thanks!

I've heard that Duke's program is very good. However, I heard vague rumors that there's some kind of shakeup going on there. Perhaps somebody from Duke's path program can enlighten us with scandals, controversies, etc.

Duke likes MD/PHDs and/or their own internal candidates. Plus it isn't a very big program (maybe 4 per year). So, if you do not fit one of these categories I would say go ahead and apply but don't count your chickens yet. I don't know about the shakeup.

only 4? oh well there goes my application to that program. might as well save my few bucks and replace duke with another place.

Dude! You have a PhD! You're gold! Besides, you aren't applying to enough programs to where you will have to pay anyway, right? I think it's about 25 or something before they charge you more. If you are interested, apply.

Anyway, Duke took 4 through the match last year. I can't say for sure they don't have more spots every year and take a couple outside the match, but as far as I know it is only 4 spots.

Dude! For real? 25 programs? Ok so I have a PhD. I don't see it as a big deal cuz I'll be honest with ya, at this point that's the only thing besides step 1 scores that I've got going for my applications. My clinical grades suck balls.

You know, I applied to about 25-30 MD/PhD programs and lemme tell ya, that whole application process was totally exhausting. I don't know if I could do it again. I couldn't imagine interviewing at so many programs (assuming that they invite me for interview). I'm thinking of applying to about 10-15 programs max.

Check out their website, they list their residents. 4 residents/year, and none of them last year were from Duke.

I would totally apply if you're interested!!! You can't predict where you'll get the interview.

i haven't heard of any controversies or shake-ups here. I'll do some more investigations once I start the surg-path clerkship next month 🙂

Have a look at Emory U in Atlanta. They're trying to continue the efforts of James Madara (now at Pritzker) of turning it into a better program. If you like research, this may be a good place since they're still working things out, like a combined residency post-doc/fellowship program. I say that because you can get some good attention from the guys and gals who want it to succeed.

I'm sorry, but I'm just a lab tech so I can't answer any questions about hours and such. I guess the hours are OK, since they have enough time to play in the IM softball league!

yeah, i've heard emory is one of those "up and coming" programs. My pathology adviser told me to put that on the list of programs to apply to.

emory has a really pretty campus...i almost went there for med school.

Yeah, Duke and Emory have strong academic path progs. Chapel Hill also pretty good, also known for good forensic path program, if you're into that (rotation or more..) Don't have a clue as to the others you mention... If you're into research big time while limiting exposure to things clinical, there's NCI, although I don't know if DC qualifies as southeast...

I want to apply to Duke, but they state a minimum Step 1 score on their website, which unfortunately I don't meet.

Well, Sharon Weiss left Michigan to run the AP department at Emory a few years back, so there are some connections...

You know, Emory becomes very impressive when you see how much money flows into that place from all the Coca-Cola stock. They lure all sorts of distinguished faculty from all over the country by giving them fat paychecks. I remember interviewing there for MSTP 7 years ago. They kept telling me stuff like, "we got the guy from Hopkins to pack his bags and move here...we're currently negotiating a contract with some bigwig from Harvard to come establish xxxxx program here." It's quite amazing. I'm sure they've been successful at continuing to do this. Hence, Emory truly is an up and coming place.

Several students from my class interviewed in the south. They all had GREAT things to say about Duke, Emory, and MUSC. One of the residents in my program was telling the medical students today that Wake Forest is a VERY GOOD program in the south. I guess they have a big surgery program, so their volume is really good.

There are some other threads about this topic somewhere in here unless they all got wiped out with the update back whenever.
Anyway, I've always heard LSU has a good program and when I was a lab tech 2 of the 4 pathologists that I worked for at the hospital i worked at were from there. They were really nice people, though i guess most pathologists are.
