I know that we're told to keep an open mind before residency and that a huge percentage of people who say they are going into IR never do, but that said, I love IR. Coolest sub-specialty out there.

So, with that in mind, I was wondering if there is a way to find out what programs are strong in IR, or which ones are weaker? Are community programs typically weaker with less opportunities?

uva is strong

U of washington
Brown
peoria
medical college of wisconsin
uva
mount sinai,
nyc
Emory
USC

Thanks!

Do you think it's okay that I mention IR in my personal statement? They say we're supposed to say what we see ourselves doing in the future. I just have a sentence stating that while IR is interesting, I'm keeping an open mind to all the fields. I don't want to kill my chances at programs that don't have IR...

You can make different personal statements.....and comment on IR in some and not in others and selectively send personal statements to programs. I don't think it will hurt overall. I mentioned that I was interested in IR in my personal statement, and I will be applying to IR fellowships in a few months.

Those are programs with strong IR fellowships. Many programs without fellows actually offer better exposure to IR procedures for their residents, because there are no fellows to "steal" procedures.

Add to programs w\ good IR fellowships the MGH, Northwestern, Miami.

Exactly

I have to disagree a little.

BCVI in miami does not have a residency. I don't think the other Miami programs are distinguished in IR. Unless things have changed in the last 1.5 years, BWH is probably the best bet in Boston.

In New England hands down Brown is phenomenal. Yale is very well rounded. Mount Sinai the 'best' in NYC is well rounded, but no big names and not well known out side of NYC/the Northeast.

UPenn has some giants in the field, but for some reason they have problems filling all 7 or 8 spots...

Further south - Hopkins, U virginia are excellent.

Best in the West coast- UW (Seattle), Stanford

Best Midwest UI - Peoria, Northwestern
MCW is strong

There are probably a few more that I'm missing, but these more or less are considered the strongest programs right now. By the time you apply for fellowship, or start your fellowship year (if you pursue an integrated track) things may change.
