Does anyone know of any programs that would give an AMG a spot in their program after doing a year of solid research at that program in anesthesia (despite low board scores)? I have heard that this could be a possibility but unsure which programs would actually consider doing this or have done something like this in the past (versus programs that say they would do this and then NOT follow through)? Feel free to pvt me too if anyone has any ideas.

How low of board scores are we talking about here? Any previous research experience?

I cannot answer your question but I can tell you the people I have met who weaseled their way into residency via research have a really hard time surviving.

It's a setup for failure. Are you sure you want to take that route?

Yes there is past research experience in anesthesia with a publication that resulted. The board scores are low, just at and slightly above passing mark; but all other parts of the application (dean's letter, med school grades, LORs) are all excellent. Even completed a surg prelim year with excellent LOR from prog director.

In response to the above comment, does anyone consider it weaseling to have their relative or friend make calls on their behalf to get spots in programs that they would not under any other circumstances would have received? I'm sure they don't because many of people have received spots using these strategies......and whether the person went down a rough or a smooth road they succeeded in anesthesia nonetheless......at least I am trying to make a hardworking attempt while trying to further the field through quality research. I am even willing to work for free.

Most of the places that actually care about research are the elite programs where you need good scores and research to be considered. The programs that may be open to lower scores could care less about research. I would tr to use any connection i had its not weaseling.
