Yes there is past research experience in anesthesia with a publication that resulted. The board scores are low, just at and slightly above passing mark; but all other parts of the application (dean's letter, med school grades, LORs) are all excellent. Even completed a surg prelim year with excellent LOR from prog director.
I cannot answer your question but I can tell you the people I have met who weaseled their way into residency via research have a really hard time surviving.
In response to the above comment, does anyone consider it weaseling to have their relative or friend make calls on their behalf to get spots in programs that they would not under any other circumstances would have received? I'm sure they don't because many of people have received spots using these strategies......and whether the person went down a rough or a smooth road they succeeded in anesthesia nonetheless......at least I am trying to make a hardworking attempt while trying to further the field through quality research. I am even willing to work for free.
