A prominent member here posted that his program is ranking anyone (even fellons) to avoid soap-ing. Is this real life? How did we get to this point when a decade ago I didn't think I could match with my PhD...

I'm also mentoring a student without a home program, how do I help him avoid hell pits like those?

Well, go for well established, large programs.

Obviously tell them to do their due diligence. One could spend just an evening looking through some of these threads and come up with a fairly accurate list of places to avoid. Also make sure they understand they are taking quite a unnecessary gamble with their future going into this speciality where basic economic fundamentals are against them. Advising someone to go into rad onc at this point is analogous to telling some one to go to a private top 50 law school don’t worry about the student loan debt and just hope for the best.
