Programs with VA rotations

Does anyone know about residency programs that rotate at VA hospitals (or clinics)?

Loyola in Chicago rotates at Hines VA which is located right across from Loyola Medical Center. Psych on call also covers the Hines ED. During PGY3 2 days during the week is spent at Hines for psychotherapy and medication management. Also some PGY1 and 2 rotations are at Hines.

Harvard South Shore's program is literally a VA program, the way I understand it.

the program i'm at does--umdnj-njms in newark, nj. haven't rotated at the VA yet, though.

Our program (UCSD) does a decent amount of VA time, including inpatient psych, 2 months of inpatient addiction (an open alcohol/drug treatment 28-day recovery unit), 1 month emergency clinic.

In Chicago, I know that Univ of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and Northwestern Univ rotate at Jesse Brown VA. In both programs, you spend time on the inpt unit for 2-3 months. UIC also has day hospital (partial hospital program), substance abuse program, rotating psych clinic, addictions and geriatrics. I am not sure what other rotations Northwestern does within the VA. At UIC you will get plenty of VA experience, especially with call.

Last I knew, Univ New Mexico, Albuquerque had all psych in PGY-1 at the VA, and some contact with VA throughout residency.

Hi All:
I am in the Harvard South Shore program - and it is about 75 % VA. You do ALL of your calls at VA's - several of the PGYI (6 mos) and PGYII (9 or 10 mos) are away from the VA at Harvard-affiliated programs; the rest is at the VA. Just about all of PGYIII/IV is at the VA - though you can do some away rotations as a IV.

UW Madison and UM(ichigan) do a number of VA rotations. At UW Madison there are 4-5 inpatient VA months intern year, call covers the VA and UW and consult service also does stuff at VA.

Add UCLA-SFV to the list. They do most of their mojo at the VA.

I don't know if it's a regional thing (and reflective of state budget cuts) but most west coast programs I looked at did significant amount of time at the VA.

You might be best served generating your list of programs you're interested in and then look over their web pages to see if their VA time was enough to scratch that itch.

I would say more programs than not have significant VA time, so it would probably be easier to compile of list of places without VA time. I interviewed at 13 programs last year, and only 3 didn't have lots of VA rotations.

I would agree.
Psychiatry isn't like FP or internal medicine where it can reasonably be done in a smaller institution. You need a large catchment area. That also usually has a VA involved except when there are multiple programs in the same area/city.
