Silly question...post-"back" or post-"bach" (bock)?

I'm tired of asking people, hey are you an undergrad or post-ba...mumble...laureatte?

i pronounce it 'back'

I don’t know I’ve always heard Bach, which makes post bacc sound like a weird transitional phase in your music listening behavior. It still doesn’t change the fact that bacc is short for post baccalaureate, whose first syllable is pronounced differently depending on what region of the country your in so my guess is go with whatever way you pronounce that first syllable.

I've only ever heard the abbreviation post-bacc as "post-back". But I think I've heard post-bacculaureate pronounced both ways.

Here in the south, people say "back"-alaureate, but I think this is wrong, as it should be "bach"-alaureate. However, for some reason post-"back" sounds better than post-"bach." So I'll vote for "back."

Yeah thats what I think. I've been saying "back" but didn't think it sounded right. Saying "bock" is kind of like saying "aunt" (instead of "ant")...

The correct spelling is baccalaureate and the pronounciation is /bak.../

Neptune is correct, I just looked in Webster's and it is bak.

You people are anal.

says a self professed member of the APCF
(Im not disagreeing with you, just trying to prove that you are as anal as the rest of us 😉)

That's just being fashionable, not anal. Arguing how a simple word is pronounced is anal. That goes right next to the "what size are the acceptance envelopes from school x" or "how many hours of community service are required to be competative" threads. 🙄

yeah, i agree. mandy's right.

To me, saying post-BOCK is like when people say "SONTameter." I'm presently a post-bac and everyone in my world says post-BACK.

Hey, I heard they ask you about this on med school interviews.

I don't know about the South, but here in Pennsylvania, everyone I've ever heard say the word pronounced it "back." I don't think I have ever heard someone prounounce "baccalaureate" as "bock-..." In fact, I'd always assumed the frequent "post-bach" misspelling came from people confusing "baccalaureate" with "bacchanal."

Well, despite the apparent "analness" associated with this discussion, at least noone will embarrass themselves in front of an admissions committee or something telling them about your "post-bach" experience.

I'm not sure if I would consider it anal, but attention to detail is (in my opinion) an important quality to have in this field. You can't just ballpark a prescription or a surgical procedure. I'm not trying to make a direct comparison between medicine and the pronounciation of a word, bur rather, if you are bothered by the latter, you most definitely won't like the former.

Anyway, I was just curious if I had been saying it right or not...more of a social anxiety than an attention to detail really.

You know...
I'm just glad I wasn't the only one wondering. The first time I said it outloud I was like...post back...bach...ugh...post baccalaurete. I've been saying "back"...and I don't think its anal...just don't wanna sound dumb 😀

It's people like you who are more worried about pronunciation than getting in, and when you don't get in, who cares what you call it?

"people like you"? Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today, mr. grumpy pants. I laugh at your goofy attempt at an insult

Speaking of which, what about mandy?
Also, zoom, where are you going next year? Have you decided what you're going to pursue?

I'm still a lowly undergrad, I'll be doing a 5th year to finish my double major in psych and neuroscience.
