ok so i've read that it should really be pronounced "phy-zee-a-tree" but hear most people say "phys-eye-a-tree".

which is accepted among the professionals in this field?

Both are correct. There is a trend toward using "fizz ee at' tree" in order to better distinguish it from the sound of the word 'psychiatry' which in the past has apparently been confusing for some patients and other healthcare professionals.

If you are on an interview - I would use the "fiz-eee-at-tree" pronunciation since that is the official pronunciation started by Krusen and on the physiatry.org website. Some ppl are real sticklers (sp) for that. I've heard both but I tried to say "fizeeattree" to play it safe.

phy-zee-a-tree if you are interviewing with Dr. Johnson at Ohio State....we had a five minute discussion about the roots of the pronunciation
