  1. Dental Student
I would like to hear some about some of the positives and negatives students have to say about Detroit Mercy.

I was also wondering if lecture notes were available in advance and if there is any talk about introducing DVDs as an alternative to buying and carrying heavy books.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

I visited UofD mercy sometime last year and had a chance to meet the admissions director. IM not one to complain but she was one of the rudest people that I have ever met. She was one of the main reasons why I did not choose that school.

Pros- Very large patient pool (its right in the middle of Detroit so you will have no trouble getting patients).
Most of the dentists that I have met that are Alumni are great dentists and say the school is a great school.

- Fairly new Sim lab (built in 97 I believe), One of the nicest sim labs I have seen.

Cons- THe building is very old. I believe they are planning on merging with another school or relocating to a different building but these may just be rumors that I have heard.

THe campus is not in the nicest part of town and there is not much to do in the area. If you do decide to go to school there make sure you speak to some students already attending to get an idea of where to live.

Good Luck!

I'm going to keep this a little short but if you'd like me to expand on any points just let me know.

Pros
- large, diverse, complex and challenging patient pool.
- most of the instructors (didactic, simlab, bench and clinic) are great.
- clinic staff are very competant
- clinic and simlab are topnotch
- this school will teach you to be a great clinician
- upcoming move

Cons
- some parts of the campus are not in the best of shape (still functional though)
- a few of the instructors are not very helpful (but I'm sure you'll find this anywhere)
- private school so its expensive (tuition, instruments and fees came to $38.5k this year)
-upcoming move

About the move. First a little history. In (consults his school sweatshirt) 1990 the Univ. of Detroit merged with Mercy College to form the Univ of Detroit-Mercy. They built a new clinic and simlab on the old Mercy College campus in 1997. Now for reasons that are unknown to me they are consolidating all the students onto the old Univ of Detroit campus (called the McNichols campus). This move is expected to be completed in 2007. They will be building another new simlab and clinic on this campus and these should be even better than our current facilities. This move WILL impact your stay at UDM (hopefully not in too large of a way). I'm not sure what impact this is even going to have on my class but I'm sure there will be some. If things go according to plan though, you will finish your fourth year in a brand new clinic, that would certainly be nice.

I hope this fully answered your question but if not let me know.
