Hello,

I'm a medical student at the point of deciding my future specialty. My wife is a resident already committed to a specialty.

I could see myself committing to any of several specialties, including that of my wife. What are some pros and cons to entering the same specialty as her?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think whether or not your SO is in a field should be the determining factor. It should be what you enjoy the most.

Without more specifics, I can't even understand where this question is coming from. Do you have any examples of possible cons you were thinking of?

I can think of a number of cons if you happen to match into the same program, especially if it's a small one, but those are really scheduling concerns and concerns over what happens if you break up. Not really concerns about the fact you're in the same specialty overall.

Major issue would be if you are both in a specialty that only matches one resident/year.

But his wife is already a resident, so it's not as if they're competing with eachother for the same spot.

The only problems are:

1) your wife shouldn't supervise you. In a big program this isn't a problem. In a small program it can be impossible to manage.
2) If you have a problem with your wife being "better" than you (or vice versa) this can lead to friction.
