For those of you who have attended UMDNJ, what are some of the positive and negative aspects of the Dental program? Even if you have friends or any information on NJDS please feel free to share your knowledge. Thanks

I heard they have great clinical program and $$$wise its hard to beat

It is a good school clinically, if you don't mind not having a personality for the next 4 years. They basically tell you what to do and you have lil input about it. I remember during the tour, the school bragged about how student affairs really is for the STUDENTS. After a few weeks in, i realized how false that is. To get simple requests usually requires some kind of petition or what on. If you dont mind being treated like a 5 year old and being told what to do, UMDNJ is a good school. However, looking back at things, I could see myself going somewhere else.

Is it true that attending every class is mandatory and they pass around an attendance sheet?

That is correct. With the advent of the attendance policy, they had gone as far as having mandatory attendance for commencement of UMDNJ’s new president. On top of that, they have made MANDATORY review sessions for boards part I. I admit some of the reviews were helpful, but majority weren’t. I feel as though the boards should be in your hands and you should attend review sessions as needed. It is true that UMDNJ is a dental school and we are merely dental students, but there has to be a line drawn somewhere between bossed around and choosing your own battles (ie going to class, etc)

am pretty sure that, in such a school system, a kiss a$$ or a suck up person would really have a treat for himself!

Is it not to your advantage to attend class? or can people do well even w/o attending class? and how does the DVD curriculum work? You guys have any books or no?

lots of people (i guess from other schools 🙄 ) skip class. Depends on how you study i guess. I have to go to class or I wont learn as well.

I don't absorb information during class. I usually read on my own to understand the topics. It is just a matter of preference which makes it silly for attendance to be mandatory. As for the DVD, it is good to use when you need to search for things, but not to actually study from. If i stare at the screen for more than an hour, my eyes begin to get tired and the quality of studying decreases. Consequently, on top of the DVD charges (which is about $1500 a year), I had to purchase the books I felt I needed. With that in mind, I feel that the DVD curriculum isn't worth it. Btw, I speak for many people in my class on this subject so it isnt just one disgruntled student
