Does anyone know why prostaglandin is contraindicated when a pregnant woman has asthma or glaucoma? First aid says prostaglandin can be used to treat glaucoma. And first aid also says it lowers bronchial tone...

Are you sure the question is right! Prostaglandins are contraindicated in pregnancy because they are abortifacient. Actually, they are used in Glaucoma treatment!

Could you post the entire question then?

It's not really a question.. it's just stated that PGE is used to induce labor, but is contraindicated in asthmatic patients. [This isn't reallllly Step 1, I'm learning this on my rotation, but I posted here cause First aid for step 1 put prostaglandin for treating glaucoma ...]

I was studying this last night 🙂
I guess whoever told you this information was a little mistaken, it is the opposite way:
If an asthamtic female gets pregnant, PGEs are contraindicated to prevent premature labor...also if a pregnant lady develops asthma or glaucoma it is contraindicated for the same reason...
However, when it is used to induce labor, there is NO contraindication for giving it for glaucoma or asthma patients!

that makes a lot more sense lol

EDIT: I just read in another source... that PGF2a causes bronchoconstriction, and thus is contraindicated in asthma patients!!!. Wikipedia also says PGF2a receptors cause bronchoconstriction.. while first aid says it decreases bronchotone
