Prosthodontics & Implants

Okay cool. Do most prosth stay away from implants as they often rely largely on referrals from oms and gp? Would you recommend a prosth place their own implants? Just curious, Ty

I don't know what "most prosth" do, but I know that the trend is for specialities getting some sort of implant placement experience (add endo to the list). I would guess that in private practice GPs would not refer to a prosthodontist for only implant placement unless they knew they were getting the patient back OR the case is too complex for them to do the final restorations. The current trend is for GPs to place their own or refer to a surgical specialty for placement (perio, os). Also, some people are attracted to prosth because they want to avoid the surgical aspect all together.

The rationale for a implant trained prosthodontist is that they are in charge of where the final teeth will be, therefore they "know best" where the implants should be placed. Flip side of that is possible deficiencies in surgical experiences and tissue management due to finite training time. I would recommend anyone to place implants if they feel as though they are adequately trained and can handle any surgical complication. Some patients and sites are a little more difficult, therefore surgical specialities exist. It's up to the clinician to know their limits.
