Hi!
I am 1st author for one paper presentation and 2nd author for a second paper presentation at an upcoming psychology conference.
I am presenting the first paper alone because my second author cannot make the conference. No problem. However, a second paper presentation where I am listed as second author has just been thrown into my lap. The first author cannot make the conference and has asked me to present for them. I have not seen the finished paper yet (the conference is in a month!) and I am both nervous and concerned about presenting this material alone.
In addition the second presentation is on a separate day from my first presentation and therefore I will need to extend my stay and pay for additional hotel costs/meals/etc. Is it ever appropriate to ask co-authors for help paying for these costs? Any advice is welcome!!

if you were not planning on staying for that day, I'd ask someone else to present it
There is no one else available which was not the plan when we submitted the presentation 6 months ago...
The only other option is to cancel the second presentation if I don't present it.

Yeah, that is a possibility. If your lab is not providing funding, it would be up to you whether you can shoulder that cost, and if you can't, then perhaps retract the presentation.

I have never heard of anyone asking co-authors to help with their costs personally. I would never do that. If it was money from a lab from a grant that has conference travel funds set aside, that might be worth inquiring about.

There are also lots of travel/conference grants out there for students. You should look into it - the conference may offer some or your own institution may offer some.

Thanks so much. I think I'll just have to suck it up and pay for it on my own. Travel grants and funding are really limited this year but who knows...
