I'm planning on shadowing my dentist this winter break, and having searched threads on shadowing, it looks like predents shadow various types of dentists for various lengths of time, though for a total for at least 40 or so hours.

I was wondering, how does one provide proof of shadowing? (Do we even need to?) Do we get each of our shadowed dentists to sign something with the number of hours we shadowed them? Do we have them write a letter? Or do we write something and ask them to sign it? I'm sure theyre incredibly busy, so I'd feel bad asking them to write me an entire letter.

Thanks for your help.

A letter always helps. If you want to keep it simple, as them to write a simple hour verification letter on their office's letterhead. It'll have their signature, and contact information on it should they want to contact him/her. Just photocopy it in mass (unless they have a form of their own), and send it out to schools that ask for one.

I only had OSU ask me to verify my shadowing hours. Everywhere else didn't ask me about them. I think a lot of schools go on blind faith that you are being honest.

Loma Linda has something like that too. They want your dentist to sign a form which confirms that you have at least certain hours of shadowing experience.

Maybe I went a little too far into it, but I even made a little booklet (10 pages) stating what I learned about the practice as a whole (how things worked, etc) and what I liked about the particular dentist/practice. I described some of the procedures I saw over the month (this past July for about 65 hours total) and he offered to write a letter so I included that in the thing too.

Another way to get around it, is have the dentist who writes you a letter of rec mention how many hours you shadowed. That's what I did.

Question though. Most schools require at least 2-3 LOR's. Is this solely from professors or does shadowing letters count too?

Tufts also requires proof that you shadowed for at least 30 hours. I just wrote up a letter myself and asked my dentist to sign it for me.

It varies a lot from school to school. Check with each school's website to make sure you have everything that's required. It really ranges from 3 to 5 lors and I think most, if not all, school's require a letter from a dentist.

If:

Is represented as:

H-A-R-D-W-O-R- K
8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11 = 98%
K-N-O-W-L-E-D-G-E
11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5 = 96%
A-T-T-I-T-U-D-E
1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5 = 100%

I like that quote...but too bad ethics only equals 64%.
