Very true... it definitely makes you think. What percent of minority to you have to be, to be considered a minority? Where is the cut? 50%, 25%, 10%....

It's hard to make a case that someone is a minority at 12.5% or less, when the vast majority of their blood is white.

Kinda off topic... But what bothers me the most about all this stuff is that people of Middle Eastern descent are considered "white/Caucasian." I feel like Middle Eastern people face just as much (if not more) discrimination as some other minorities, but we do not officially get any of the "perks." Middle Easterners frequently have trouble even raising allegations of discrimination since racially they are white and "national origin" is not always an option.
Even the term Middle Eastern is ethnocentric and orientalist.

I know the history behind the classification and the variety of reasons people have chosen to maintain it....but it still bugs me.


Basically the classification system we have in place is outdated. I just hope that one day all this race/ethnicity stuff will be a thing of the past.

Exactly. As long as the system is rigged and corrupt, I tend to fully take advantage of it.

Well it asks for your ethnicity, and if I put something, they will mark me as "URM" somewhere.

lolz 'rigged and corrupt'? isn't total urm dschool enrollment like 10%? 1 in 10 seats hardly strikes me as the foundation of crusade against the injustice of dental school admissions.

I am aware. My point is focus on those types of classifications and not skin color/being Hispanic. If the reason is to counteract discrimination, then account for other minority groups.

If you/other people disagree with me that's fine, I just think our current system doesn't work.

Do did you grow up in harsh environment where it was very difficult for kids from ur neighborhood to even finish high school?

This is what it means to be URM when it comes to applying to a college and label urself URM. Anything otherthan this and you are just kidding urself

Just because a loophole exists, does not make it ethical or right to take advantage of it.

what this guy said. I am the opposite. I am black, but I can't say I was disadvantaged. Both of my parents have PhD's and we live in a nice neighborhood. We are probably 1 of 3 black families in this gated community. Am I disadvantaged? No, However, I am an Under Represented Minority.

You may not be black, but by the mere fact that you are black, you are URM and your standards are much much much lower.

I don't think the standards are much much lower for minorities. I think they look at people who they think worked hard enough and who they believe can graduate from dental school. They don't accept students who they think will drop out. Also, there needs to be an increase in minorities because they are the ones who are more likely to serve in an underserved area. Most everybody else wants to go somewhere they can live comfortably and make money.

You already knew how the system works, so why didn't you work harder in undergrad? don't blame the system when you didn't work hard yourself. You think just because I knew URMs have it slightly easier for admission that I just slacked off during undergrad? You have nobody to blame but yourself buddy.

I wish you the best in your application this upcoming cycle. Hopefully you improved on your stats from three years ago. If you are planning on lying on your app, please do let us know how it goes. Maybe you can start a new trend or something.
