Proving URM

Should I be full black or half black/half Hispanic?

I'll be the latter for double power (it's super effective).

I know this a troll thread, but it kinda makes you wonder about the entire process. Of course, you cannot claim yourself to be African-American or Hispanic, but you can always claim you're a billionth Native American without backing that up.

Harvard was under intense pressure to hire some URMs back in the day, and they decided to hire a "Native American".

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2012/05/31/elizabeth_warren_acknowledges_telling_harvard_penn_of_native_american_status/

So if you want to claim URM status really badly, being Native American is the way to go.

Very true... it definitely makes you think. What percent of minority to you have to be, to be considered a minority? Where is the cut? 50%, 25%, 10%....

It's hard to make a case that someone is a minority at 12.5% or less, when the vast majority of their blood is white.

Kinda off topic... But what bothers me the most about all this stuff is that people of Middle Eastern descent are considered "white/Caucasian." I feel like Middle Eastern people face just as much (if not more) discrimination as some other minorities, but we do not officially get any of the "perks." Middle Easterners frequently have trouble even raising allegations of discrimination since racially they are white and "national origin" is not always an option.
Even the term Middle Eastern is ethnocentric and orientalist.

I know the history behind the classification and the variety of reasons people have chosen to maintain it....but it still bugs me.

Basically the classification system we have in place is outdated. I just hope that one day all this race/ethnicity stuff will be a thing of the past.

Exactly. As long as the system is rigged and corrupt, I tend to fully take advantage of it.

The burden is on them to fix it, not for me to NOT claim my 1% heritage.

The "perks" are not only given for discrimination, they are also given for unfair socioeconomic or educational disadvantages to a race or ethnicity. Middle Easterners are FAR less likely to experience these disadvantages compared to other underrepresented groups.

hahahaahahha this is me right now!

but im white.

i think OP is just playing a joke and OP if you are serious i would suggest not to do it. Lying is not how you want to get into dental school. instead of working on your manipulating skills, work on your DAT or GPA or whatever else, just be honest.

too many sensitive people here smh

op if you have the balls just do it and tell us how it goes

btw since aadsas isn't race specific application adcoms can't ask any race related question to verify your race since it can be considered as racial discrimination.

Well it asks for your ethnicity, and if I put something, they will mark me as "URM" somewhere.

I know that argument but it doesn't make much sense to me for a variety of reasons. If its about such disadvantages, then classify people as such. There are many blacks that come
from wealthy/educated families. There are middle eastern people that are the descendants of ford assembly line workers living in michigan working class neighborhoods. There are also many refugees that are very disadvantaged.

The questions should focus on income level, parent education, etc. this huge emphasis on race needs to become a thing of the past.

Using race/ethnicity as a metric for this is (going back to what I said earlier) outdated.

lolz 'rigged and corrupt'? isn't total urm dschool enrollment like 10%? 1 in 10 seats hardly strikes me as the foundation of crusade against the injustice of dental school admissions.

there's a whole section on that. i believe it even uses the word 'disadvantaged' in its title.

I am aware. My point is focus on those types of classifications and not skin color/being Hispanic. If the reason is to counteract discrimination, then account for other minority groups.

If you/other people disagree with me that's fine, I just think our current system doesn't work.

How can they prove you or are not URM?

I'm actually debating putting URM status (either AA or Hispanic) and seeing how many interviews I get.

No, this isn't a troll post but I've been a lurker for years and had this question.

simply being black (or Hispanic or Asian or Middle eastern etc etc) DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE URM lol... you have to actually (and really) be under represented minority (keyword "under represented")

Do you live in poverty?
Do did you grow up in harsh environment where it was very difficult for kids from ur neighborhood to even finish high school?
Did you have access to healthcare?
This is what it means to be URM when it comes to applying to a college and label urself URM. Anything otherthan this and you are just kidding urself

As an example....A black rich kid from a wealthy family is not URM

Solid argument, but I'm pretty sure you are wrong. I believe you are confusing URM with Disadvantaged. The UR in URM is the key word, you are right, however it refers to under representation in the dental field it's self. This is why Asians are not considered URM when applying to dental school (there are already so many Asian dentists). What you are talking about is being disadvantaged. for example, I am a white kid who grew up poor in the hood, and was, in fact, the minority where I lived, however I can not claim to be URM, but I can say I was disadvantaged.

Just because a loophole exists, does not make it ethical or right to take advantage of it.

what this guy said. I am the opposite. I am black, but I can't say I was disadvantaged. Both of my parents have PhD's and we live in a nice neighborhood. We are probably 1 of 3 black families in this gated community. Am I disadvantaged? No, However, I am an Under Represented Minority.

You may not be black, but by the mere fact that you are black, you are URM and your standards are much much much lower.

This post was trolling with dupe accounts. All accounts banned.

I don't think the standards are much much lower for minorities. I think they look at people who they think worked hard enough and who they believe can graduate from dental school. They don't accept students who they think will drop out. Also, there needs to be an increase in minorities because they are the ones who are more likely to serve in an underserved area. Most everybody else wants to go somewhere they can live comfortably and make money.

You already knew how the system works, so why didn't you work harder in undergrad? don't blame the system when you didn't work hard yourself. You think just because I knew URMs have it slightly easier for admission that I just slacked off during undergrad? You have nobody to blame but yourself buddy.

I wish you the best in your application this upcoming cycle. Hopefully you improved on your stats from three years ago. If you are planning on lying on your app, please do let us know how it goes. Maybe you can start a new trend or something.
