PS Readers

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone out there want to read my PS? I havn't had any luck asking people so far, sorry if this is not appropriate to post like this :scared:.
Bkv11 - I'll read also if needed. No credentials really, just a lot of informal advising on academic writing.

EpiPEN - I'll help out, when I'm not studying

enjoydrywax - I will read your essays for content, not mechanics. Credentials: wrote my essay in one day, had my friend (who was also applying) read it once for content, had my anthro prof read it for mechanics, turned it in the next day. Result: interviews all over, so I assume it wasn't a weak essay. [/arrogant bastard]

lisasimpson87 - i got lots of compliments on my essay (after it had been proofed by a few ppl on here) and i read a bunch last summer so i have a sense of what a good statement sounds like. im big on honesty and i wont sugarcoat my comments at all- dont take it personally.

CourageKid - I currently work as a tutor. And I'm out of school, so no homework to get in the way.

SB100 - I'll do it. I'm on reduced senior status next semester, so I'll have very little work to do otherwise.

muggle911 - I'll read. Have lots of free time since all I'm doing is waiting for results from schools. I'm a tutor, Kaplan instructor, etc. Can help stylistically and w/ editing content of statement, but not so much w/ grammar.

ohmedschool - I can help. Pretty confident it was my personal statement and secondary essays that got me acceptances. Also got a T on the MCAT writing section and am an English minor.

jamesq - I can read if anyone wants to send me a PM with their PS. I got a S on the writing section and consider myself a good essay writer. More than fixing grammatical errors, i will probably give you a better idea of how your PS reflects your passion as a future physician.

Retsage - No real qualifications, except that I'm a science major who's currently ranked first in the first and only English class (third year literature) I've ever taken. And a 'T' on the MCAT.

cast128 - I will read....have a minor in English.

thegetupkid - I'll read. I wrote my PS in three days--had my best friend (English/Bio double major) at Stanford proofread. In the end, was told at several interviews that I had a "great PS". Have found success in the application cycle. Will read for both grammar and style.

drhouse42 - I'd be glad to read it and try and make suggestions. I don't exactly have anything special to offer, but I do have my eyes and brain.

drelizabeth292 - I will be very happy to read PS for people. I have a TON of time since I just received my B.S. and have nothing to do until Med School starts in August.

LadyDemosthenes - I'll read as well. I'm good at cutting things down if they're too long and getting rid of unnecessary details. I'm also not afraid to give constructive criticism. I'm not an English major, but I have read quite a few personal statements. Good luck to everyone this cycle!!

CancerKiller007 - PM me and I will be glad to help. I am not an English expert, so I probably can not help you with the grammar, but I can help you with content.

ar2388 - I'm totally willing to read although I will be unavailable from january 5-12.
I am not an english expert but I am a whole lot better are proofreading that actually writing. I will do my best for you and try to give comments about both grammar, content, and anything else you may ask

boggvir
- I am willing to read PS. I used to work in the university's writing center, and I've looked at many personal statements of students applying to various professional schools.

shnuffles - I'd love to read, at least until school begins mid-Jan! I've been doing this for a lot of my pre-health friends lately, and its a blast! Probably not the best person to turn to for grammar but can certainly steer you in the right direction. Good luck!

olemissbabydoc - I'll read. I was one class short of an english minor, did well on the writing section of the MCAT and 36 on the english portion of the ACT. 4.0 for english and grammar classes... grammar and spelling are my strengths, transitions are my weakness.

If anyone wants help, let me know.

bfreefasho - Credentials: Got into medical school with 3.05 GPA and 2.97 BCPM, with a full scholarship. I will not read for grammar, but will help with developing overall themes or ideas throughout the essay that will make you (the applicant) stand out regardless of GPA or MCAT.

Sandlot13 - I'll read any PS too! I was a peer reader at my undergrad for three years, and read a few PS last year during the cycle. I tend to focus on style, theme, and personality while I look at papers, and can figure out flow problems as well. My own personal statement was a little "creative", so I am not one to shy away from trying new ideas or pushing some of the typical limits that most people adhere to.

DL611954 - I'll read and give great, impartial feedback. I've taken several writing/English courses at my university (A's in all, with some great papers) and am a very skilled writer. I got an "S" on my MCAT writing section and have alreayd been accepted to medical school in the 2009 cycle, so I am very much current and fresh from this process, and would be able to help you a great deal.

aebvd97 - I'll definitely read. I volunteered for a year for my university's writing center (minored in english). I have also had very, very positive comments on my personal statement from each of my interviewers. I'm now gradu-ma-tated and so have plenty of time on my hands in the evenings.

EM_Rebuilder - I am a resident physician with some light experience of going over applicants/interviews. I would be willing to read well polished Statements and give you final thoughts/opinons. I do ask you please only send me Statements which have been gone over for Grammar errors and are 'well polished' in your mind. Thanks.

supergirl87 - i'd be willing to read PSs.

MDman87 - I haven't even written my own personal statement yet, but I'd be happy to read others' for grammar/spelling/mechanics. I am a strong English student, and I think reading other peoples' statements might help me develop my own.

jaySundevil505 - I can read ps. Don't really have any special credentials. My mentor (btw, who has been on a med school admission committee for two schools) gave me tips and helped revise my ps. I've been told i wrote a good ps. I was successful applying this cycle. I can probably help more with content and style.

hoya09 - I'll gladly read anyone's personal statement for content as well as form. That being said, I'd prefer a polished draft (read: please use spellcheck and proof it for grammatical errors before sending). I'm a Biochem/Linguistics double major, so I may have a rather unique perspective. See my MDapps for further info regarding my publications and other credentials of interest.

aunt ethel - My qualifications are:
1) getting into a US MD program with a crappy GPA (and good essays)
2) having access to my significant other, who grades college papers for a living.

chad5871 - I got a lot of great advice from SDN volunteers last cycle. I'd love to read this year. Send me a PM and I'll let you know if I have time to read your PS.

As far as qualifications, during undergrad my English professors referred to me as "one of the best writers in the class" and requested to use my writing as examples for future semesters. Additionally, I have been invited to interview at almost half of the schools I was complete at and accepted at 4 M.D. programs so far. At one of my interviews the interviewer said that they were "dazzled" by my PS. I even received an interview at Columbia despite a 31R, 3.86, and a B.S. from my low-ranked state school.

I would like to read PSs that are atypical - my PS was definitely something different and bordered on the "risky" side. Apparently some of the admissions committees liked it (and some didn't). Send me your PS when it's as good as YOU can get it. I'm a busy guy and I don't have the time to edit your first draft.

thatcalgal - I am not in school right now, just working and interviewing so I have a lot of free time to read! I am not the best at grammar but good at editing content and picking apart inconsistencies, so I can be a useful tool for those who are starting out first drafts of their ps.

w8ting2exhale - I'd love to read PSes and help in any way I can. I'll give advice on mechanics, content, and flow. Qualifications: I'm a philospohy minor and I'm into creative writing.

UCSFMed1 - I am a fourth year at UCSF. Will help with content, but will be brutally honest!

LolaMD - I would love to read!!!

sevenmints - A little bit about me: Senior in college in Cambridge, MA. Biology concentrator. Currently finishing the app cycle. I don't post much on the forums because most of the topics are trivial speculation and argument etc.

Qualifications: I know how to write a PS (and essays in general). I applied to 27 or 28 schools, so I have a lot of practice. I worked extensively with an HMS M2 on my own personal statement, so I know the benefits of having excellent guidance and honest but constructive criticism during the writing process. I've helped students write personal statements for college before. I even worked with an international student whose linguistic idiosyncrasies made comprehending and revising his essays particularly challenging.

I am also currently learning screenwriting. You might be surprised how writing for film requires clear and concise imagery and discipline in terms of format and style. In case anyone is wondering, I got an O on the MCAT. No excuses and no explanation. If you really think writing in a time constrained environment is a worthwhile metric of expressive ability, then I may not be able to help you. Also, just PM me for contact information if you are interested.

spelledout - I would be willing to read personal statements for both content and grammar (I am very big on grammar) and can offer constructive criticism. In writing, I tend to try and keep things interesting and pertinent, with a penchant for the offbeat (my own personal statement was indeed just that, but I got many compliments on how well written it was). I think that it's important for your personal statement to be interesting and to be an insight not just into your achievements, but into your personality as well.

Brushfire - I'd like to help. I felt I had a solid personal statement and a knack for conveying a sense of professionalism, and at the same time, a mellow/affable nature in my primary/secondaries/interviews.

Contentablue - I've got a week of "free time" coming up (3-16-09 to 3-22-09). I'd be willing to read a few statements during that time. I can read for content, flow, offer suggestions/revisions, constructive criticism. Let me know!

21385 - I have applied to many medical schools, and have been accepted to 2 so far, and have interviewed at many medical schools.
I can help with the ideas, and giving a positive impression on the admission officers.

joyus195 - I am willing to read essays as I had great help when I was writing my essay for grad school. I have degrees in Biology and Psychology so I had to write a lot of essays during undergrad. I did not apply to medical school (will be attending school for Occupational Therapy) but would love to help out!

gatoradedrinker - Hi, I'd like to be added to the readers list.

Bachelors degree in science field, then completed a Masters degree in the humanities/social sciences (literature intensive). Interviewed at several allopathic medical schools and will be matriculating at a University of California institution. Have helped numerous people with personal statements and am a very experienced writer. If you'd like an extra set of eyes to refine your personal statement, look no further. I would be happy to help.

DrReo - I've read many pre-dental students and a few of my pre-med friends' PS. I'm willing to help out anyone. Will be attending Tufts Dental next year...

Dashne Gafoor - Please add me to the list as well. I have a strong background in English and grammer. I used to teach English as well. I will not only offer constructive criticism, but can also assist with developing ideas and making your personal statement deliver its purpose. I helped a few of my friends last year who were applying at schools.

whitefang21 - Please add me to the list, i reviewed my personal statement and help some friends reviewed their personal statements. The main thing about your personal statement is that it should convey your ideas .

Rollo - I'll read for content and maybe some mechanics. DO Applicants, I'll especially read yours for content because I'm pretty sure that I got accepted because of the content in my PS and secondaries to all the DO schools that I applied to. I'm pretty much a solid writer who knows how to set myself apart from the rest.

Credentials: S, R on writing for MCAT (took it twice), As in couple of upper level writing courses in undergrad, and frequently write inspirational essays on other forums. I pretty much kickass at writing powerful pieces of writing so I will definitely give you major pointers.

grapz - Hi, please put me on the readers list. I will read/edit Personal statements.

I scored 39 on mcat (13 on VR, and T on writing ). Currently in med school but I have some spare time and would love to help some people out.

dhoonlee - Please put me on the list. I remember using this service years ago - it was very helpful. I have just completely 4th of medical school and have some time before the start of residency.

GoSpursGo - I honestly don't have much credentials beyond the fact that my essay was apparently good enough to get me in, even though I really didn't think it was the greatest. I can help mostly with grammar and mechanics and a few general things like that, but I don't really know that I can let you know if you have a "strong" subject matter or not; for that you may need to get someone else's opinion. So go ahead and PM me if you want someone to read your PS over. Please don't be offended if I wind up telling you that I'm too busy... you may just catch me at a bad time where a bunch of other people had already sent me one, or you might catch me during my week of finals. I do promise that if I CAN read for you, I will.

chameleonknight - I will read a few, as my responsibilities are slim to none this close to graduation.

nina7123 - I am willing to read some PS. I'm not a professional...but I've been told I'm a good writer and used to edit my friends' essays in college  I'll read for overall content and flow, and will point out grammatical errors.

987- I can read a few!

SBK- I would LOVE to help a fellow SDN-er out. I can help you proof-read, add ideas, or whatever.

chunkimunki -
i can also read PS for about a month ... i can provide help for grammar, sentence structure, etc

if you want to know more about my credentials or anything else about me, just PM me!

mmmcdowe- Now that its summer, I'm lonely and crave human contact. I'll read some Personal Statements and offer advice. My ps played heavily on my family (parents are a doctor and a nurse. It taught me about medicine outside of the whitecoat), my dancing and artistic experiences, and my experience saving a man who had had a heart attack and drowned. I also wrote a lot of essays due to my stupidity in applying to 30 schools. Essays included my research on ants, my growing up with minor disabilities, my experiences with a specific patient, and my interests in defining "good medicine" and medical history's role in this now and in the past. I didn't really get many comments about the quality of my essays (Harvard interviewers wanted to know about saving the guy, Yale interviewer wanted to psychoanalyze the role my father had in going into medicine. They didn't really comment on the quality though, nor did any other school), so I can't really tell you if I am "good" at it. I will help with grammar, etc, but I make no promises on catching them all. I consider myself pretty strong in that department, and got an S on the writing sample. I grade essays for Kaplan, as well as teach.

riceman04-Hi! Riceman04 here...I was successful in this application cycle and received great feedback on my PS in non-blind interviews

I can definitely read

kac714- hey, I've got some down time now, you can add me to the list!

too bad none of those ppl will actually read your PS.

I got one response from olemisslady, who is amazing btw! no other responses tho. 🙁 I msged most of those ppl too....boooo👎

Not that I think mine would be something anyone would want to steal, but I'd be afraid of someone borrowing things and schools finding out about it. Professors/parents/friends you know is what I'd recommend.

yeah, i also only got one response. but let's try to give people the benefit of the doubt... as busy as you are trying to write your PS, they are equally busy and doing everyone a favor by even agreeing to be put on the list.

I don't think she is a member anymore, because I can't find anyone to correct mine either.....and I looked but can't find her.

well i sent mine out like 10 days ago. by now if I don't get a response, that means i'll never get one. so, that thread is pretty useless IMO haha.

oh well, at least SDN tried to help us!! 👍

Hmm I wonder why people volunteer, if they don't want to do it.... it's either that or everyone on that list is piled up with statements to read.

As a former reader, sometimes you get piled up with essays. Sometimes you just aren't in the mood and you forget about them. Sometimes you told them to remove you from the list and even though your name is no longer up, people still send them to you.

This is why when people ask about paid services like EssayEdge, I have to say that it's useful whereas most of my peers on SDN will say that SDN gives free advice, which is just as helpful.

Sure, it's true. Unfortunately, it only works if the right people respond. Not all editors are created equal.

I have time tomorro, so if you want me to analyze it, PM it to me.

haha, i sent mine out at the end of march. so... yeah. all i know is next yeat i'm not gonna volunteer and give people hope that i have time for them when i probably won't 🙂

If you PM me it, I'll give it a quick read through with some general comments.

olemissbabydoc is definitely around, as are several others. Perhaps persistence may pay off?

Also, as well-intentioned as they may be, I would caution you against sending your personal statement to anyone who is currently applying. Some are trustworthy, some are not. You don't want to find out the hard way.
