I just received my secondary from Pikeville. I really would like to go there because I love what I know about the school so far, but I know very little about the town. I am a Black American, and I really don't want to go somewhere knowing that I will have to put up with racist crap the whole time. I basically would like to know how developed and accepting to minorities is the this city? Thanks

I'm a first year at PCSOM, so I have limited experience here, but I can give you my opinions so far 🙂 Since I've been here, I've felt nothing but welcomed by everyone I've met here. At times when I'm out at lunch or walking back from school, people will ask me if I'm a medical student and every time they always remark on how happy they are to have the medical school and the students here. The town is small, but in the small time I've been here, it's really starting to feel like a home. Although every area has its own pros and cons, I don't think you will have a problem with race here. I would even say that I see less problems here than I did where I'm originally from, Cincinnati. PCSOM is a wonderful school and Pikeville is a great town. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me anytime... if I can't completely answer, I can at least direct you to someone who can. Good luck on your apps and I hope to see you here next year!! 🙂

I could not agree more with this quote. Well put JMC! I am a second year student and love the school. If you want to become a great Osteopathic Physician, this is the place for you. you'll get stared at... but you get used to it. anyone that's not from the area sticks out, regardless of background. overall, the people of pikeville are generally friendly. the most racism you'll probably ever run into is someone using the word black/negro instead of "african american" or oriental/yellow instead of "asian" or "pacific islander", more out of ignorance than out of spite. the football and basketball teams are predominantly black, if that helps at all...

Yeah, most of the scorn you'll get is from not "being from around here" as opposed to your color. Because of the long history of the Appalachian area being made fun of (Hillbilly jokes, inbreeding jokes, etc) most are very suspicious of "outsiders". If you actually start liking the place and letting people know it, the people will do anything for you...if not...well it's only 2 years.

Pikeville is a nice small town, devoid of any racism. You will only feel awkward at first because "you are not from here". I am a 2nd year student, and there is one african american JB in my class, and 4 in the 1st year. We love to have JB as our classmate. It is great to have a multi colored class rather than a unicolor.

i couldnt disagree more with these posts. there are several undergrad black students here and 1 in our (2nd yr.) class. i am white and every time i go anywhere around this town people stare at you and are plain nasty around here. i walk around the town a lot with my wife and people honk and yell and push the throttle when they see you crossing the street. other things to boast about- a fatal accident nearby on 23 weekly, fast food is anything but fast, and good luck finding a decent place to stay unless you qualify for welfare housing. the education is a mess- half the profs are doing well/great and the other half just plain cant teach. if I were you, i would go elsewhere to become a doc it is not worth the frustration.

Wow, maybe you should take your own advice and leave.

I am not from pikeville, but I loved the area and plan to return after residency. I walked/ran all over downtown and only occasionally had a couple of teenagers honk the horn, but that can happen anywhere. In the past I have seen some med students running around town wearing super tight super short shorts(all were guys) and they ran like a girl. If you fit this description, someone is going to honk at you and maybe tell you that you have a pretty mouth. Wear normal shorts and a normal t-shirt and you will be okay.

Overall, my time in Pikeville was great. Even if Dr. Stiles is forced to leave, the other positives at PCSOM will allow you to be a great physician.

There are worse places to live and attend medical school. If you work hard and study, the opportunities will eventually come. Remember, some people would give anything to be in your shoes. Make the most of it....you'll be outta there in a couple of years anyway.

Hi, I am a member of PCSOM's Class Of 2010. OP, let me inform you that recently (I think it was late 2004?), three African American players on Pikeville's football team were the victims of racial harassment. A white man came to their apartment and threatened to "slap the black off of them."

What's really disturbing is the case went to trial and he was actually acquitted.

Guys, I know this is an old post but I've been seeing, reading, hearing more and more of this about Pikeville. I thought since one of Kentucky's ex-Gov. lived there that it would be a decent place! Then someone schooled me about the corruption of Kentucky politics.

How is the social scene there? Any clubs, etc? There has got to be a few good places to eat and things to do. My buddy says deer hunting is huge down there, which for me is a big plus. Anybody got any good dear hunting stories?

okay...I've confirmed that these stories are true. In a way I'm kind of happy that I will most likely be leaving KY for med school, hopefully New England.

Finally, having lived in Kentucky for all my life, I'll be able to go where people wear shoes.
