Hey I was wondering if anyone out there actually has an electronic, centralized log for PSE sales at their pharmacy. We still have the crappy paper log book at my pharmacy which is a pain to fill out and doesn't really stop people from going all over town to buy the stuff. I live in central Illinois where meth is a huge problem and it seems like even with these logs and reasonable suspicion (meth mouth, coming in every 2 weeks buying 2 96 ct. packages, rubbing alcohol, iodine, dirty sooty fingers, and smelling like weird burning) it seems like there is nothing we can do. All we can do is keep an informal "meth watch list" and hope the police will come to look at our books and arrest these people. Anyone have any thoughts on this? How do you deal with it at your pharmacy?

How about you just refuse to sell to those people, nothing is stopping you from that?

Rite Aids in NY have a central log. You enter their drivers license into the register and if they dont have any id they dont get any PSE

At my CVS (in Texas) we still have the paper log. There isn't much that we can do and it seems that the police haven't picked up anything from us in ages (we literally have over 100 pages filled in the log).

We were one of the only pharmacies in the area open last Sunday. In the span of less than two hours we had at least 5 people asking for their requisite two boxes of sudafed (or actifed - lots of them like this one for a reason). They all were dishevelved, but kept up the cheery talk to keep us distracted. I was able to turn one away because the ID he presented obviously wasn't him (another lady that came in had a suspicous ID, but we couldn't prove it wasn't her, so we had to sell to her).

The last straw was when the other tech I was working with was entering info into the log and noticed that the address on the ID matched the address of the previous person on the log. He said, "hey, do you know this person?" The guy said no, never heard of him. The tech said, "Funny, he lives with you." He went over to the pharmacist and showed him the log. The pharmacist came over and said that he couldn't sell him the sudafed. The guy shrugged and left. After that, we just told people that we were out of sudafed - which we pretty much were at that point. It didn't really matter, though - there's a 24 hour Walgreen's across the street as well.

I hate to think that I'm such a hard ass and cynical about this stuff already. Maybe I'll become more lenient, but I almost hope not.

Edit: Oh, and to answer your question, I think that Target has a centralized PSE log.

There is nothing you can do! This was a political swipe at a problem which exists beyond methamphetamine & pharmacy became the broom doing the swiping. I don't worry about these folks since within 1 mile of where I work there are 10 pharmacies. I will not spend my day worrying if the ID they show me is valid or not since they pay people $5/hr to cruise pharmacies. In CA I can dispense syringes & needles cheaper & easier than pseudoephedrine - go figure! On the one hand, we don't want them to die of AIDS but on the other we're trying to limit meth production 9G of pseudoephedrine @ a time. What a crazy policy!

OK....done with my rant for now!

Wow I never really thought of this happening as Meth doesn't seem to be a large problem here in Louisiana. But maybe I am wrong..

If they have their liscense and appear to be under the limit (at least at our store) as techs, we pretty much have to sell to them. We can only refuse to sell if they're over the limit.

Yep, Target has a centralized PSE log. It works pretty well... all the information is stored in the POS system, so after the first purchase of a PSE product, the patient's DL number and DOB are the only things that has to be entered. Sign twice, and you're on your way.
