Question. I'm getting frustrated with these forums. After reading posts I feel like I'm not going to match into anything! I just got my step I scores back...198. I am currently in the bottom 1/4 of my class. I still have my clerkships and 4th year, so hopefully I can make up some of my poor performance during that time. The thing is, I've been interested in psych since undergrad when I majored in psych, however, I keep on hearing about how "Psych is getting more competitive because it is a "lifestyle" specialty" I've always heard that psych is one of the least competitive speicialties which gave me some comfort, but after browsing these forums I'm starting to believe that all specialties are super competitive!! 😕 😕

Don't get too stressed out. You have a lot of time left, and will find that psychiatry, while becoming more competitive, is still not too difficult to get out of medical school. The secret does appear to be getting out regarding the money and lifestyle ratio compared to other specialties, but this should not deter you.

What school do you go to? An American med school? That certainly helps, but certainly isn't required. Do well on your clerkships, get a couple good letters of rec, and you'll be fine.

I go to an American medical school. I would like to go to a fairly decent program if possible because the idea of a fellowship is appealing to me at this point. Thanks for reply, it was just very discouraging to find out how I did on boards...eventhough I was relieved to pass.

While good board scores don't hurt, and every program looks at them, keep in mind that many fail the first attempt. Step I is brutal. Congrats for passing. You'll get in. One step at a time.
