I know the night float vs. traditional call debate has been beaten to death in the General Residency Forum, but what are opinions of either concerning psych residencies? I'm sure a lot of it just comes down to personal preference. But since traditional psych call is often much less frequent compared to other specialties, it seems that one could end up doing many more call nights in a night float system. Also, any thoughts about the educational value, or lack of, for each system.

Thanks a bunch in advance.

What I liked about the night float at my residency program was that you ended up having a LOT of autonomy during your float months--and you really learned from that. It helped that we had good SW and nursing support at night. Then your calls the rest of the year really were limited--and you never had to work the next day. It will certainly vary depending on how the program sets things up, but it was one of my favorite months of the hospital-based year of residency.
