Anyone know any specific programs where getting involved with this research would be possible? Or generally the best way to pursue LSD/psilocybin/MDMA research during amd after residency?

Been very interested in this topic for years and as I get closer to deciding on psychiatry, the ability to pursue this would be an added bonus in potential programs.

My favorite way to go about that is finding your favorite new research articles (pubmed, google scholar, uptodate even), and just check what institutions those authors are coming from.

Didn't we do this already?

Look at MUSC, Emory, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, UCLA, UCSF, UNM. I know that these institutions have investigators working on these drugs in some capacity. Yale has a decent resident interest group. Check out MAPS (organization) and Psychedelic Science (conference) for more info.

If I remember one of the more impressive recent psilocybin studies was at Sloan Kettering, so I would assume there are some people at Cornell working in the area.

There were two big psilocybin studies in geriatric depression that were the basis for a special issue in the Journal of Psychopharmacology in 2016, which got a lot of press. One was done at Johns Hopkins, the other at NYU.

You may be confusing it with NYU. Neither Cornell nor MSK are doing psilocybin research, but a year or two ago Ross, the lead PI of the NYU study, presented the results at Cornell psych grand rounds, and Breitbart pretty much tore the study into small pieces because of issues with study design and interpretation. Jus'sayin'

Guess my memory isn’t as good as I thought. Interestingly saw article in NYT referring to this study and Breitbart said

“Medical marijuana got its foot in the door by making the appeal that ‘cancer patients are suffering, they’re near death, so for compassionate purposes, let’s make it available,’ ” he said. “And then you’re able to extend this drug to other purposes.””

So wonder if some part of the objections is more from a philosophical slippery slope concern than from concerns with the actual research. Which is completely legitimate, the “medical” MJ situation is completely insane.

You may be right regarding the underlying "slippery slope" concern. I don't remember the details of Breitbart's critique but I remember leaving the rounds with an impression that using psilocybin to enhance psychotherapy was an intriguing idea but Breitbart's critique of this particular study was on point.

It's fringe but rapidly approaching the mainstream. Yale has a vibrant student interest group and a few psilocybin studies cooking. UCSF has psilocybin and MDMA studies. Duke has a student interest group. Stanford is a bit conservative here.

Search clinicaltrials.gov for studies that are currently / not yet recruiting. There's active psilocybin research happening at UCSF, Yale, Hopkins, UA-Tucson, NYU, UAB, and UNM. For MDMA, you're looking at Emory and UCSF.
