Is there such a thing? Can a psychiatrist work as a hospitalist the way IM docs can? If so, what's the benefit to doing it?

Yes, in a C/L situation. The benefit is no continuity of care, if that appeals to you, meaning no call/no calls in the middle of the night, no overhead, frank salary, and all the other interests of c/l.

I'm sorry, I haven't even started med school yet. Can you tell me what C/L stands for?

Consultation/Liaison...also known as Psychosomatic Medicine. See the "Psychiatry Fellowships" sticky at the top of this Psychiatry Forum for more details.

There are also some inpatient psych settings which are experimenting with a hospitalist model--7 days on/7 days off in tandem with another doc.

I bet you need the two psychiatrists to have a good relationship and similar treatment philosophies. I could only imagine the disastrous outcome...

"Haldol 5mg bid" ... 7 days later "Zyprexa 10mg qhs"...7 days later "Haldol 5mg bid"

Could you imagine the splitting a skilled BPD client could do with psychiatrists rotating weekly?

...I laughed out loud when I read that.

It's designed to be a "short stay" unit (<5 days), but I get the drift...😀
